The simplest answer is that a non-denominational church is any church which is not part of a larger denomination. A denomination is a church organization that exercises some sort of authority over the local churches that comprise it. Examples of denominations are Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, Episcopal, Wesleyan, Methodist, etc. Non-denominational churches go by many different names and hold to a wide variety of beliefs. Why do some churches choose to be non-denominational? Though the answers will vary somewhat, a major consideration is the freedom to direct the ministry and teaching of the local church without interference or control from without. When we look to the Bible, the evidence points to each church as self-governing and answerable directly to God Himself. In the book of Acts, where we read of the first missionary journeys and the establishment of many churches, there is no indication of a hierarchy of authority beyond the local elders of the church. Some people point to the Jerusalem council in Acts 15 as a pattern for denominational structure, but it is nothing of the sort. The Gentiles had been given the gospel under the ministry of Paul and Barnabas, by the direct authority of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2; 15:7). The churches established in that first journey were left under the care of elders (Acts 14:23) from their own ranks, after having been taught by Paul and Barnabas. When the council was called at Jerusalem, it was not because of any question of organizational structure or control, but to discuss doctrinal matters about what constitutes salvation (Acts 15:5-6). The apostles who had been directly commissioned by Jesus were the only people who could properly address the question authoritatively. The measure of any church, whether inside or out of a denomination, is not how it is organized nor what name it is called, but rather how faithfully it adheres to the teachings of the Word of God. No church is inerrant, because churches are made of people who are capable of error.

I sort of agree with you. I prefer a non-denominational church for the basic reason that I don't want to be taught church doctrine. I only want to learn about Jesus and the nature of God. So many denominations lose much of the Bible while they're busy teaching church doctrines. Some are even starting to deny the virgin birth, etc. That starts getting onto dangerous ground.
I'm content in the fellowship I attend, knowing that the only doctrine being taught is Biblical doctrine, not churchianity.
God bless!

I prefer denominational. If they are denominational, atleast they have their creeds and beliefs written down. Whether they adhere to it is another matter.
If a non-denominational church writes down what they believe in their own constitution, that's fine too. I like them both as long as the fundamental beliefs are fundamental.
I think the problem is that the leaders, whether the pastor or the elders, force their own man made doctrines or lack of it on the congregation without basing them on scripture alone. I had to stand up to the pastor and the deacons when heresies and such infiltrated my church. It was not pleasant, but it had to be done. Fight the good fight. And speak truth in LOVE.

Any is okay to me, I will attend any church denomination. Besides, it is kind of fortunate for the church to have an established creed, that way I know from the outset whether or not I agree with them. I could go to a non-denomination church and they could either say every word of the Bible is true or come out saying that Jesus was just a mere moral teacher. Denominational churches though have more organization and stability in their creeds. You know more what to expect.

I think you would find that most non-denominational churches have their own beliefs. I don't belong to any. I am a member of the church that follows Jesus. I go where I am comfortable, but I don't join any church...If they ask you to join or not attend,,,then I just don't go back.
Sis n law belongs to a church that refused to let another sister n law of mine attend their bible study unless she joined the church and they require you to bring in 12 new members when you join.

To much church doctrine in denominational churches, I also noticed alot of members have more "pride" in denominational churches. I always have and always will prefer non-denominational churches.

I AGREE! I was raised as a Catholic, but left and attended a Presbyterian Church, then I worked in a Methodist church (aaack - talk about your bureaucracy!).
Now I am happy to say that I attend a non-denominational church where the pastor is accountable to the congregation.
And actually believes the bible...!

Those who have embraced the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and are born again are the "Church." (1 Cor. 15:9) As long as they are teaching the Holy Bible, they are the Bride of Christ (Rev 21:2)
In my old nature, I was not able to look through outward appearances at first, I needed the conservative congregation. Growing spiritually and striving to "walk in the Spirit", I now enjoy being part of a non-legalistic church.
