3 of my dogs suffer from flea allergies can you give me any good shampoos, ointments, or drops that will help me keep the fleas off my dogs and allow their hair to grow back and keep my dogs from itching. Thanks

I personally think Revolution sucks...and I am a vet. We carry it at my office because my boss recommends it all the time, but I highly recommend Advantage instead (also carried at my office). I like putting my patients on Advantage and Heartgard instead of Revolution because Revolution doesn't protect against hookworms (intestinal parasite). I frequently see patients come in that are on Revolution and they test positive for hookworms. I'd also talk to your vet to see if you can apply it more frequently than once a month (I sometimes recommend that for some clients but I can't give you details of how often, etc without a patient/doctor relationship). You also need a good exterminator that is spraying specifically for fleas (I just found out that the regular monthly exterminator services only use chemicals for fleas if they are told to by the customer...otherwise it's just stuff to kill ants and roaches, etc.) I don't know where you are located, but Fleabusters is a company I generally recommend to my clients. You need to treat the inside and outside of your house. Vacuum everything, including baseboards and under the furniture. (use a floor vacuum if you have tile). Throw out the vacuum bag afterwards so the flea eggs don't hatch in the bag. I do not recommend over the counter flea shampoos, as they can be very toxic to some animals. You also need to use a mild shampoo when using the topical flea products (whether you choose Revolution or Advantage) because harsh shampoos such as medicated ones (even from a vet) or flea and tick shampoos will just strip off the topical flea product. Hope this helps. Your vet should have discussed all of this with you at your last visit, and if you have any more questions, call your vet. He/she should take the time to answer any further questions you may have.

None of the over counter products sold in pet stores are very effective against fleas. Some of them are very dangerous, especially if your dogs' skin is already broken and irritated. The best products for fleas are sold in vets' offices. My vet recommends Frontline Plus. Also available are Revolution and K9 Advantix. These are all liquids which are applied to the back of the dog's neck once a month.
What did your vet recommend? If he did not sell you a prescription flea control for your allergic dogs, I would find a new vet. If your dogs' skin is already very irritated they problably also need a steriod to stop the itching, and if the skin is broken from their scratching, it is likely infected and needs an antibiotic. It is much better for allergic dogs to keep them on monthly flea prevention year-rond, so the skin doesn't get damaged by scratching.

There is ONLY 1 cure for fleas. The name of the product is Revolution. This product is a non-invasive, 1 minute treatment, once a month. The topical solution that comes in a small tube (dependant on each dog's weight) and is applied once monthly between the shoulder blades. The reason it is the only cure is because it cures all 3 stages of the flea life, the egg, larvae and adult. Whereas your over-the-counter shampoos and TOXIC flea collars are produced with pesticides!!!!! and are only targeting the adult fleas! (the harshness of these toxins could be a contributing factor to the hair loss) Other benefits to Revolution include preventative care for heartworm disease, mange mites, and ticks.

I must add that this is veterinary exclusive, so it may mean a trip to the doctor!

While the newer flea products (FrontLine and Advantage) are very good, if the numbers of fleas in the environment are extremely high, then you will see fleas on your animals . . . these products don't "repel" fleas but will kill the ones that get on your pet. So, if your dog/cat walks through your yard (or house) and there are thousands of fleas there . . . the bugs will jump on your animal . . . sure, they'll be killed later but they will still have the bugs on them (eeewww!). So, the key to controlling fleas during a bumper crop year is to treat the environment as well as the pet. Use a good insecticidal spray in your house and yard. If you choose the "fogger-type" sprays, remember to spray where those don't reach (under the beds, under tables, sofas, etc.). Vacuum well before and after the treatment and throw the vacuum bags away (the fleas will hatch out of the bags). When treating your yard, don't bother spraying in the areas that get lots of sun, spray in the shady areas or damp (mulched) areas. You MUST repeat the environmental control in 2 weeks to interrupt the life cycle of the flea. There is one stage that no spray can kill (pupal stage). The little sucker are virtually in a bomb shelter during the pupal stage and no insecticide cn penetrate the shell. Those will hatch out in 2 week cycles, so that's why it's important to repeat the environmental treatment. You may have to do this several times at 2 week intervals. Speak with your local veterinarian about effective and safe insecticides that work i your area of the country.

The vet can give you some proper treatment, and should have done when s/he diagnosed flea allergy!! Frontline, Advantage or Revolution are all good, make sure they get on the skin of your animal, not his fur. Don't get pet store products, they don't work, including shampoos.

You also MUST treat your house, with a veterinary product - you really need to get rid of ALL fleas to save your dog's suffering.

I use frontline plus. you need to put it on every three weeks and all the dogs must be done at the same time. then get adams spray(get at pet store) and spray where they sleep and you carpets. you can get spray for them too. if the are allergic you need to take them to the vet. there are pills they need. mine had to take a steroid for the rash. even antibotic. if they are chewing to the point of losing hair they may have a hot spot or make sure they dont have mange. that could kill them. But frontline plus works for my dogs. If you use that it will take a few days for all the fleas to die and they shouldn't come back. wash them in an oatmeal aloe vera shampoo. also there is a website called vetproonline.com(i think that is right) where you can get stuff cheap. good luck

You have four "pits", three of them are flea infested to the point that they have developed bald spots.
I'm also sure that you call yourself a "dog lover".
