Why? And make it something they could actually have as a pet. Lions do not count.

A bird. My children will be taught respect and kindness for animals. Unless you've rescued it and are arranging for it to be rehabilitated, it isn't right to keep a flying animal in a cage with clipped wings and nothing to do but stare out the bars and ring little bells for some human's entertainment.

Minus allergies, there is no reason why you should not allow a specific animal. Your child should be mature enough to handle most of the pet's care, especially if it is their pet. And on the same token you shouldnt make the kids take care of Your pets.

I saw some people listing specific breeds like pit bulls. These breeds are violent bc that is what they are taught. If you get any animal just after being weened you can train it in the way you want. All animals can be made violent, and all animals can be made sweet.

Defaintly not a Chow my friend had a 1yr old baby 2yrs ago and had a 2yr old Chow pup. They acted fine together for a bit. The next night while my friend was in the kitchen( I wasn't there she told me this)she heard her puppy growling and getting all aggressive. So she didn't think anything of it till her baby started crying. Going into the living room to check on her daughter the Chow was in the baby play pen on top of the baby. So ya if you can plz stay away from chows cuz anything could set em off.

You took all the fun out of the question/answer by saying lions don't count. I was getting ready to answer alligator. Or a pit bull with rabies. But now I am reduced to answering more realistically. Pit bull would not be permitted or a large dog as well. In fact, pit bulls would be out of the question. My nephew use to breed pit bulls. Until they mulled his leg.
Now, about them alligators. Did I ever tell you the story...........

PItbull. Sorry-I know bad reputation and all. But just can't take the chance. Maybe when there are only adults in our home again.

BTW-we have a English bulldog. And he is as sweet and loving as the 2 golden retrievers we had a few years back. Easiest puppy EVER! Not hyper at all, just slept all day.

A hamster. I had A hamster when I was 8. It crapped all over the place. It chewed up the cage. It ran on the wheel in the middle of the night, and I would never be able to sleep. The rat chewed up the cage when we moved him, and it was all broken. Then we moved him downstairs, because my sister was having a birthday party. I lost interest in it once we got a dog. Then it "ran away." I find out 9 years later it died.

I am not a big fan of snakes, mice, spiders, ants, and Chows. My daughter was about 9 when she went to her father' house and his girlfriends Chow bit her for lying down beside it. She is now 18 and she has a very noticeable scar that still haunts her of that dog to this day.

An ant farm!!!

My son and I are way too clumsy to have something like that around!! I was going to get one for his birthday...and as I was looking at the box in the toy store I had this mental picture of the ants escaping and running amuck throughout the house!!

A tarantula *shivers* I absolutely hate spiders and having one around all the time would be horrible and its possible that it could get out of its cage and run free in the house and may reproduce and well spiders=BAD pet, but thats my opinion

lets see, no snakes, spiders, scorpions or anything of that nature. No wild animals because wild instincts come with those wild animals. Of course, my child wants to be an animal trainer at the zoo, so all bets are off.
