Before I give advice, I try to make sure that the advice I'm giving is actually advice I would follow myself. I try to put myself into the other person's situation and think about if someone gave me that advice, would I follow it? I figure that if I wouldn't even follow my own advice, then I probably shouldn't be offering it. I also try to make sure that the advice I'm giving is constructive (not destructive) and is sensitive to the person's feelings.

Well, with some things I know the answer right off that I want to give, but I often look up info before I answer to avoid giving the wrong advice. I usually look up things I've never heard of before I decide not to answer a question. It's sometimes pretty educational for me to answer questions. Also, I think of the safety of the person. I don't wanna tell someone to do something and then they decide not to go to the doctor and then wind up having more problems.

I try to think of the best possible way to reach the person in a loving and caring way. Not to sound harsh, or like a know it all, but to show them that I sincerely care about them and have an open mind.

My sister always asked for my advice. Then she moved far away form me and now I can detect that really what she needs is for me to agree with her. So what I try to do mostly is just listen and say when I agree that makes since.

Is it something I've been through, or something I studied in school.
