yeah that's a myth more bogus than leprechauns. weight training actually promotes , healthy lean muscle growth , flexibility , stamina, strenght, and overall growth. the only thing bad I would say is your 16 and your muscles are still very young and fragile and in the stage of growing. so your are prone to injury. so be-careful and don't try to lift what the muscular guy in the wife beater next to you is lifting because you can very easily damage yourself. stick to moderate weights , with high repetitions. and like said above take a day off between each work out , to help your muscles grow and recover. and you wont see tremendous results because you are only 16 , so dont get frustrated. by the time you are 19-21 you will have a leg up on every one else in the gym , and your muscles will be stronger and leaner than everyone Else's too. good luck , train hard , eat healthy , and get good rest.

It's not likely you'll stunt your growth with weight training. You should lift enough weight that you can only do 8-12 reps. Also, make sure you take one day of the week off, to let muscles rest and grow. Muscles do not grow during weight training, they grow during rest.

Your mum is correct. However, by means of stunted progress we do not imply smaller than you will have to be, we imply smaller as a result of disfigured bones. When hanging a muscle underload generally and forcing it to develop, we're honestly shortening the total duration of the muscle (thats why educated muscle tissues appear toned). This is pleasant for humans approximately 18yrs+ as their bones have more commonly completed developing. At your younger age you continue to have plenty of developing to do. If you begin shortening the duration of your muscle tissues now, they'll bend your bones (suppose stringing a bow and arrow. The bone is the bow, and the muscle is the string at the bow. If you're making the string longer, the bow can be straighter). However, this doesn't suggest you should not do any type of recreation in any respect. Younger humans will have to do plenty extra cardiovascular undertaking (walking, mountain climbing, biking, and so on - at your age I could customarily be determined within the tree tops lol). To construct a few muscle tone, persist with frame weight sports as those will tone muscle tissues with out distorting bone. Try doing the next two-three instances every week (not more or you can over instruct and motive muscle loss). Body weight squats - two units of 12 Wide grip push up - two units of 12 Chin Ups - two units of as many as you'll be able to (as much as 12) Tricep Dips - two units of 12 Back extensions - three units of 12-15 Crunches - three units of 12-15 Try and do aerobic a minimum of three-four days every week. At your age you will have to be out gambling with peers, and so on - now not in doorways on Yahoo! Answers asking questions ;o) Have a laugh!

Im 16 too and regardless of the growth stunting thing, i think weight training sux, i concentrate way more on my own body weight training thats - pushups, situps, crunches, handstand pushups etc. It's really toned my body as well as piling on the muscle.

I don't think I can be more specific than this ... No.
Stunting your growth from weight training (At least at your age) is a myth, an old wives tale. You will grow from weight training, and feel good about yourself as well.
