Morris and Robert gave you the correct answer. you do not need a passport to cross the border until after summer 2008...and as a Canadian permanent resident, you do not need a visa to travel to the U.S. After summer 20088, you will need to use your passport. s you are not yet a Canadian citizen, you need to keep your passport from your home country current so you can use it.

i'm sorry but depending on what country you come from, you might need a visa. if the country the canadian permanent resident comes from needs a visa to enter the US, then they need to get a visa to enter the US. whether by land or car. the US does not give any free passes for canadian permanent residents.

canada however does allow US permanent residents to enter their country with just a passport and their permanent resident status, even though their country of origin would be required to present a visa.

so for a canadian permanent resident entering the US border by driving, you need your passport definitely and possibly a visa. ids are only for citizens, not permanent residents.

A passport is the best way to get into the states. Eventually everyone will need a passport to enter the states, even americans. So it is just best to get a passport, also depending on where your passport is from you may need to check about visitor visas. Also if you are from certain middle eastern countries you need to check and see if you are allowed to use certain border checkpoints. I have a friend who flies into the states all the time and he can only fly into certain airports that are equipped to deal with possible terrorists.

Right now, 2 forms of picture ID, & proof of residence.
January 1, 2008, you'll need a Passport either way.

If you are driving (not flying) a drivers license and a copy of your birth certificate. A passport may be required for land travel in the future.

G'day Nesterlub,

Thank you for your question.

I would say that you would need your passport plus possibly a visa depending on the rules relating to your nationality.

You should contact the US embassy or consulate for more information. I have attached their contact details for your reference.

Regards
