American here and I tip no more than 10% unless the service was way and above normal.
The way I look at it, people know what their actual pay is when they take the job. If they don't like it they should get a job where they know what their paycheck will be every time.
I would prefer the businesses to just add money to pay their servers better and say NO TIPS ALLOWED.

In America we have what is called a minimum wage...however servers in restaurants only get 2$/hr, instead of the 6/hr or whatever the minimum is now. (In Ohio...my last serving job was 2.13/hr) We tip this so the servers have an adequate wage. Maybe in the other countries they make more...or the cost of living is less. I am not sure. However, if you can not afford to tip...don't go out..it is rude to not tip(Adequately...and the minimum is up to 18% now) here.

I must preface this by saying that I am an executive chef...at a popular restaurant in Chicago. I have worked in every facet of the restaurant business...I have traveled through Europe, Latin and South America and Asia...In other countries, most servers are paid more...usually a decent living wage.
I think if you recieve good service...you should tip. Those people make $4.50/hr. The work is not easy...you try dealing with the public and making them happy so you might recieve something...frankly...and to no offense...my servers dread when someone European comes in...because they know that they are going to be very demanding...order ALOT of food and drinks...and tip them like crap. Sadly, most foreigners face that stigma, and it's because of some people who are jerks. Although I don't agree that you should be profiled for any reason, just know that it's out there.
If you are unsure and not feeling comfortable tipping...order food to go, or make it your business to tip for good service...if it's bad, take it up with the management. I want my guests to be happy and my servers to make money. They go hand in hand.

Because restaurant employers dock server's pay to below minimum wage based on the assumption that they get tips. I don't agree with the practice and frankly I hate tipping unless I get excellent service. American culture is turning to a culture of pity - "tip your server, they make lousy money & who knows what they go through." ...bunch of junk. I work just as hard and don't get a tip for it. I'd rather pay more for a meal and know they're recieving a fair wage so people will stop pushing tipping on the customers.

Well I'm sure that stereotype does not fit everyone, but the reason why my parents tips is because they remember back in the day when they were the ones serving people. A good tip may just have turned your day around...

Because it is showing gratitude that service was prompt and good. I have gotten tipped just doing my job and not really going over and above and sometimes the opposite getting nothing in return for going over and above. I will tell you one thing I have gotten tipped more on graveyard where its less busy and none during more busy times. My mom even tried to tip the Taco Bell drivethrough guy last week. I guess its all about spreading the wealth I guess?????

We tip because we want to be seen as generous. When there is a tip jar in a coffee shop or at a grocer's (for the baggers) don't you WANT them to see you stick in the dollar bill? So they know you tipped them?
In Italy, where I lived for several years, we tipped the bathroom attendant and she gave us toilet paper (not at every establishment, but at some). You would never see that in America.

b.c there is a difference between min. wage and waitress min. wage. Here in NY the min. wage is 7.15/hr and 4.50/hr for waitresses. How would you like to work as hard as a waitress for only 4.50 an hour? You probably wouldnt. If we didnt tip them well they would all quit and we'd have no one to serve us! America is lazy you know
