You can get special covers for cars, which are a lot less expensive than a new paint job and you might not have to wash your car as often either. I don't think there is any sure way to keep the cats off the car other than put it in a garage, and that's not always available. Punishments don't work with cats, because they don't think like dogs do.

I've had plenty of cat prints on the surface, but never had any of the cats scratch the paint on either of our two vehicles.

Are you sure it's not a dog getting up there? Dog nails would do damage, and some dogs love to lay on the hood of a car to soak up the heat from the engine.

I'd suggest a tarp thrown over the car as probalby the only viable option if you didn't have an enclosed garage to put the vehicle in.

You could punish the cat for getting on your car. But you need to do that while the cat is actually ON your car, or it wouldn't work. Like, you can flick its ears just a little bit, but make sure it hurts the cat some, so that it remembers. Or chase it away with a broom or something. Do that often enough and the cat'll remember.

Alternatively, you can get one of those "car jackets" that cover your whole car. How successful this is depends on how often cats want to walk all over your car. I mean, if you can't come in for 10 minutes whithout having a cat on it, you can't be covering your car every time can you?

Cats like the warmth of the engine, especially when it starts to get cold outside. They also like high places it gives them a better view point to run from other predators or sneak up on prey. Cover your car with a plastic tarp and spray the tarp with an orange citrus scented dust cleaner like Pledge. Cats hate the citrus smell. My guest bedroom has the orange scented air freshener fan in it and my cats stay away from the room.

You'd have to put a cover on it. Kitties love to be on cars. Mine haven't scratched my car, but my dog sure has.
