...at what point does the communication from person to person change like the way it is now on R&S (The Religious debates)? Is it in College or is it later on? Do the debates even reach that harsh level of fallacious arguments and hatred? I need to prepare myself even if the debates aren't that important.

Good for you. Have a star.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone (of whatever belief or religious persuasion) could reason together without being offensive and hateful?

The good news is that in real life, people don't have the courage to talk the kind of smack they can get away with here, hiding behind an avatar. So be encouraged. I doubt that the "real world" will ever get this way, either in college or later.

I think there is a big change between high school and college, if that is your question. But in college, if you get rude, the professor should correct you. You will need to learn how to recognize the major logical fallacies, the major propaganda techniques, and so on. Rhetoric is the old-fashioned term, and some schools may still use that in their course descriptions.

It's a great idea to take at least one speech course, because what you learn there about persuasion and rhetoric will also be useful when you write. And being able to speak in front of a class or a larger audience is quite useful in many situations.

"harsh level of fallacious arguments and hatred" What are you talking about? those debates are the best. The very pinnacle of verbal conflict. It wasn't a good debate, if by the end no one lost it and got violent.

It's not a debating forum, in fact that is not allowed and Yahoo have been known to come down hard on that.

What you are referring to is when someone from one side launches a question that is calculated to offend and it works. That's all. Some of the questions here are actually quite friendly but it's the ones that provole argument that get noticed.

It really depends on the debate. Fortunately, here on R&S, we can simply ignore paradigms that are illogical or fallacious. In the real world, the least sensible argument is usually the one shouted loudest.

It started with rightwing talk radio. Seriously. It was a new form of preaching, with call screening to buttress the side of the host.

I don't see an end to it anytime soon, since they have been indoctrinated in the ways of Stalinism.

I'm sick to my stomach... the best answer to my last question was just deleted. Apparently, he was an atheist and his entire account was deleted. That's why R&S is a sham and anti-atheist.
