First, you'd get further if you put this in the right category. But I will take pity on someone who is obviously new here.

There are two types of avatars. Those cartoon-like characters that tend to all look alike (and have remarkably narrow necks) are created by the Yahoo! Avatar program, which is free. Go to your profile page, click on the edit function, and scroll down to where it says "picture." There are three options. The one to the right is the one you're on now, which is "no picture." The one on the left is the avatar program one, and you can change it to a zillion variations by clicking the link just below about editing it. In the center is an option called "Use my 360 picture." That's what I've done, and what the various photos and graphics and stuff are using. For that, you need to create a 360 page, but it doesn't matter if you don't use it for anything other than the picture you want to use. Any jpeg file can go in there.
