If so, which institutions do this and do you pay any money or is it for free since they can use your data in their research?

First, I have heard that some has been done for free, as you say, for research. I do not know of any doing it for free at this time.
Yes, you can find out your origins through a DNA tests. Not "ancient", but centuries ago.
I used www.familytreedna.com. They sent a kit with two swabs; I rubbed the insides of my cheeks, sent the kit back and weeks later got the results in the mail. I can also access their website with my own password protected webpages showing ancestry for my Mom, for my Dad, which at this point is all over the globe.
A lot of it ties in directly with my paper trail, so the one reinforces the other.
There are a lot of them out there, some tailored for Jews, some for American Natives, some for Africans, so choose the one that works best for you.

it's true, you can. but the testing costs a lot of money. and the results are only for one gene in your entire genetic code. so it only gives you a VERY small bit of insight.

if you want my opinion, it isn't worth it.

yea, but why do you want to know. It costs a lot of money and knowing the answer won't change who you are inside.
