Ask her to go out to see a movie or hear a band. Don't let difference in age keep you from making a friend. People are younger inside than they look.

Hey, people are people and you have to realize that all old people age and go through a stage in life where they are just plain cranky and just need some time alone and time for themselves because not always will they have the time or be prepared to be with someone and if shes in her mid-40s with no partner well its for a reason and if her attitude is what you think is affecting her social life it might not all be pointed towards that maybe it may other reasons as well you might never know what might have happened when she was younger maybe she has a lot going on if you say shes ambitious it doesnt hurt I mean you cant say elder people get braggy sometimes. I think for now what would be best is just find her a friend find someone she can communicate with and just get aquainted with becuase you can jump to comclusions maybe you shoundt have pitty for her at all ;] .

Bitter, ambitious & jealous people usually don't make the best of friends! She is not old by any means & needs therapy to help herself get happiness from life. Your pity will only help her to dwell on her unhappiness. If you want to help - ask her along with your sister & a few other people to a fun outing. Maybe try roller skating in the park, picnic at the zoo; go to a funny movie! Anything to get her mind off herself. Good for you to be so caring!

Perhaps she is single by choice or because she is bitter, ambitious and jealous. Either way if you dont like her attitude I wouldnt associate with her. She may be going thru early menopause so it could have nothing to do with her being 40 and single. It would be very hard to make a change in her at this age. She has pretty much already determined how she will be.
