I will never forget the first couple of Muslims I spoke to after 911. Immediately after 911, there was more confusion that anything else. Yes I had heard about Islamic terrorists my whole life, but I never payed any attention.

So, I started going to Yahoo Islam Chat to meet Muslims as I knew of none in my immediate surroundings. The first thing to shock me we all the hatred for American culture that streamed through the Islamic chat room. If this was representative of Islam, then it was obvious that most had a deep deep hatred for American culture.

One of the conversations etched in my mind, was with a Muslim woman in Texas. She referred to Bin Laden affectionately. She called him "our (islam's) puppy dog". I softly asked her why she believed, and all she could repeat was "we love the Hijab. We are not sluts like you".

Again, I never asked anything other than why she believed, and all she could angrily respond with was "we love hijab. your all sluts".

I thought about that conversation for sometime after. Why was "hijab" the only thing that came to mind when I asked her why she believed? Why all the hatred?

As I got to meet more an more Muslims, online, and finally in the community, it became more and more apparent to me.

I have noticed a direct correlation between insecurity and affection for Islam. The very few Muslim woman I have met, who are secure and/or semi-attractive, were anything but devoutly religious.

However, of course, the majority is insecure, and Islam is a perfect housing for that insecurity. If a beautiful woman makes another female feel jealous...what better justification to annul her beauty than Islam?

Its true that the most pious woman are the most hideous (outside and in).

Dr Dufuss:

Im sorry, what is this "true muslim" distinction your making? Have you studied Islam in any depth? Can we agree that, anyone who apologizes for, or makes claims about, anything they havent researched in any depth, is an absolute buffon...the refuse of the world?

While many Chistians have become very dogmatic in the way they practice their religion, the bible itselef is actually fairly open for interpretation. Christianity is a religion of openness and forgiveness even if those who practice it do not necessarily practice those beliefs all the time. Islam however is extremely regimented. Every aspect of a muslims life from sun up to sun down from cradle to grave is strictly ordered by laws dictated in the Quran. Recently I was curious about why muslims celebrate Ramadan. None would answer my question. It turns out it is a ritual spelled out in the quran that they must fast for one month each year. The specific rules are given and the only reason I could find came at the end. Apparently it wards away evil. To me islam does not seem to be based on insecurity but on obedience for the sake of obedience. Many aspects of it when viewed from the outside, seem rather superstitious and cultish. I don't think they choose to be muslims, I think they are to afraid to think of being anything else. Whether they believe in their religion or not, leaving the faith is a death sentence. I think most people turn to religion out of a lack of faith in themselves. But Islam holds its people captive by fear of death should they ever turn away. That is not a religion of love and peace.

I think religion in general is attractive to insecure or weak ppl. Muslims are just as bad as xians when it comes to knowing scripture, but not practicing it. Religion is a menace, not the actual belief just the dogma, especially when an entire group believes the same religious laws. They get overzealous & that is when it all goes to sh*t. Things are misinterp or embelished by leaders & the entire meaning gets mangled. Many times, more often than not, religion is used for personal gain, which leads to demonizing others to make themselves look better.

Add- sorry, I meant ,many, not all. How one little word can change it all. LOL

Sounds like you had a bad date who made you feel really bad, but thats okay. You will bounce back. The guy can be labled as a verbal bully who has interpersonal conflicts he should really resolve. No one should put anyone down for any reason. But we all know that will never happen. Verbal bullys feel bad about themselves and the only way they can make themselves better is by putting others down in hopes of making that person feel just as bad as they do. They also want others to think they are better and one step above everyone else. Its a crazy world out there with alot of sick and nasty people. Best of luck.

The more cultish aspects of any religion appeal to insecurity. I mean, it really would be nice if there was an answer to everything, and better still if it was conveniently located in one book, or one person, or whatever. But the most cursory examination of the world shoots that idea through for me.

Muslims ,or lets say Islamics, have no allegiance to this country. We are the land of satan according to there way of thinking , they want to wipe us of the slate along with Israel. They bow and pray to Mecca 5 times a day , if given the chance they would enforce shari law .If you dont convert then you are open to be taxed out or killed if you convert from Islam you are open to be killed..There is no freedom of a free will or mind

First thing is, if you want to develop an opinion about Islam, you do not go to some chatroom or to some woman - how do they represent Islam truthfully?

All people who think bin laden is helping Muslims are not educated and are not thinkers. bin laden has made life harder for all Muslims around the world. His actions are not encouraged by Islam, in fact they are condemned.

You may have spoken to insecure people who follow blindly. But I assure you, Islam is a Religion which does not encourage blindness.

Religion in general attracts the insecure. I think the more authoritarian the religion the more it attracts the insecure.

no. were not weak or insecure; we're humble and modest. please dont judge us before you get to know us. we dont all hate americans and we're not all like "we love hijab, ur a slvt." i dont wear hijab and i dont see any non-muslim woman as a slvt whoever she may be. please dont judge all of us by one of us who happens to be a prude.
in conclusion, we're not all weak or insecure, and the women arent all america-haters in long black cloaks and face veils who see everyone with a bare head as a slvt. that's only about 3% of us, 5% at most.

I think the attraction is the worldliness of Islam. For example you can have many wives.
