I think they are pronounced the same when they are stressed, but "est" is much less likely to be stressed than "et" is, so in practice Diana P's answer is right.

Yes, they are pronounced the same, and you have the pronunciation close to correct- it's a sound between the vowel in "pet" and the vowel in "tray".
