I basically live in the middle of a forest, and have been thinking about getting satellite tv, will the trees have any affect on the reception i receive?

Yes, basically any physical blockage will destroy the signal. I have the same problem. You can get the azimuth and elevation angle of the satellite from the satellite service you're thinking of using. Trees must have been cleared for your house. See if you can place a dish either on the edge of the roof of your house away from the satellite or on the ground on the side away from the satellite so the dish looks over your house and hopefully over the trees. Remember that trees grow.

I've seen some people use holes in trees.

Yes, it will affect it. Nothing can be in the way of where the dish needs to face.
