i have a chinchilla, and i might get a dog. but before i get one, i want to make sure if it would be a good idea. if i do get one, i will put the chinchilla upstairs, and cover the cage with something so the dog cant get to it. so what do you think?

oh, i LOVE animals, and treat them all equally, so i dont think one is gonna get jealous or anyhting like that

It depends, if you are very concerned, look for a breed with low prey drive (means they are less likely to hunt down little things). Also train the pup from a young age to leave the chinchilla alone. I have dogs and rabbits, strangely all my dogs are considered high prey drive breeds, but they taught to leave my bunnies alone, so they do. I have a Sibe, A GSD, and an American Eskie.

If you do get a dog, just make sure that you keep the chinchilla and the dog separated while you're not at home to supervise. Instead of just covering the chinchilla cage, you should shut him/her up in another room when you can't be there to keep a close eye on the two.

I doubt the dog would bother the chinchilla...you could teach the dog not to.
Plus, it's usually cats that mess with smaller animals..like rats, chinchillas...rabbits...etc.
So yeah, go ahead and get a dog.

Sure get a dog as long as you can provide shelter, good food, money for the Vet, money for frontline,crate,food,toys,etc..Oh and if you buy a long haired type dog count in grooming to the bill. Are you home for at least part of the day.WHat happens if circumstances change and you have to re-home the dog do you know someone that will take it?

If yes to all of the above...Have fun!

I don't think you need to take such drastic measures. Are you getting a puppy? Then he'll get used to your other little buddy. i know people who have a cat and a dog who share the same sleeping basket. And believe me cats can be very possessive. With dogs it's different. he won't harm your chinchilla.

I'm sure it's fine. Maybe consider looking into getting a dog with characteristics that would inconvenience you less in this situation if you still have doubts.

well as long as the dog is good natured you should not have any problems. i have a chocolate lab that i let my box turtle play with and he just looks at it and follows it around and he has never tried to hurt the turtle at all.

I think it depends on the breed of the dog, is it a friendlier dog, etc.
