My boyfriend just kept going on and on about a boxing match and kept replaying the "best" part over and over in slow motion. I don't understand why it is so wonderful to see people getting hurt by other people.

The enjoyment of seeing a fight is just a reward for following very old survival instincts.

It ensures an interest in things that may improve our own survival or breeding chances

Just like a young lion watching its mother kill, or any other animal learning by imitation the same way, guys are attracted to hunting or battles between 'potential foes' over females.

While we don't need to survive like that anymore, we still get the same kick out of it-several million years of instincts cannot be changed by a few generations of daily bathing and watching sitcoms :):)

Women still have it to, though its more related to the "choosing a strong mate to breed" instinct.

While you may not like boxing, your attraction for your guys stronger body, longer arms, narrow hips etc are all part of the same thing.

One day we may move past all this, but we will probably have moved past sexual intercourse by then too.

let's not evolve too quickly :)

That's because you're a female who refuses to understand that boxing is a lot more than two men beating each other up. It involves a lot of technique, preparation, heart, and skill to excel at. It's perhaps the hardest sport to do. It's not some unskilled street brawl. The two competitors and athletes in the ring know what they are getting themselves into, they fight for pride and to hold a living. As fans, we appreciate the sport and the athletes, and support our favorite fighters, which is why we, and perhaps your boyfriend, get excited.

They(the boxers) make a choice to get in the ring. It takes alot of talent and dedication to train for a match. There is alot that goes into a boxing match...changing styles and stances and such during the match. its not just about hurting each other

Simply put, because it's the second best thing next to actually being the one doing the beating yourself. Of course, just watching is also good if you're no good at beating people up, since you might be the one who ends up badly beaten : P

That is odd. Because, I have known more women who were boxing fans than men. There was a group at the Univ. where I once worked who would travel to Las Vegas to see big matches .. I thought it was damned odd.

There is an unbelievable amount of skill that goes into a boxing match (or martial art match). In addition to physical conditioning and skills, you need to constantly out-think your opponent while being attacked. Being in the ring is like being in a live chess game. Being outside the ring is like watching a really fast pass chess game. Personally, I find it very interesting. Very, very interesting.

Well why do women enjoy reading gossip column where grown women beat up each others reputations for the pleasure of the viewing public?

If you have a great fight then its good to watch your favourite boxer and dissect the fight. To watch the little nuances and ask why did he do that. I remember Roberto Duran fighting Davey Moore, he wanted to know how hurt he was so he left him a few openings to test him. When he found out he didn't react he got his answer. The rest was history.
