You may or may not be medicated with anti anxiety meds before the procedure depending preference of the doctor.
The first step in LASIK is creating the corneal flap, your eye will be held open with a device. Using either a microkeratome (uses a small blade) or the intralase laser ( all laser no blade used. and usually more expensive) a flap will be created, your eye will look as if you have a contact on the eye with a hinge left at the top of the contact attached to the eye. The dr. will lift that up and treat with the laser to reshape the cornea according to what your prescritption is. After the cornea will be irrigated and the flap layed back down and placed back exactly where it came from. Medicated drops will be placed in the eye such as a antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and maybe an aspirin for the eye and maybe a artificial tear. You may be sent home with sheilds on your eyes or at least sunglasses. You will need to go home and sleep or at least have your eyes closed for most of the day. You will be using a few different drops in your eyes for about 5 days and after that you will continue to use artificial tears to keep the eyes moist since that is the biggest side effect of the procedure. This is the procedure for just LASIK, if you needed to have epi-lasik or PRK then the creation of the flap is different and healing time is longer and more difficult in most cases ( depending on the surgeons technique.
As far as age goes it is best to wait till age 21 when your prescription is most stable. Some drs with do at 18 some with even do at age 15 but then you have a much higher risk of needing another procedure done to recorrect possibly more then just two treatments, and you always have to think about the amount of corneal thickness you have, you are only born with so much tissue, each time more and more will be taken away and you must be left with at least 250 microns of tissue in the stomal bed. Make sure you do a lot of research on the doctors and centers you are considering and alwasy get more than one oppinion, not all docs are ethical in this business since LASIK is the "money" in the eye care field.

Hope that helps!

Check out the website that oct r suggested - there a lot of other websites that explain in detail this procedure - check the all out.

There is also a new "intra" LASIK procedure that uses two lasers and they don't need to cut a flap (I'm sure there will be other names for it too).

Most important:
Use a "BOARD CERTIFIED" OPHTHALOMOGIST !!!!

You will find many good links about lasik surgery just by punching it in to Google.

When the time comes, you will be given all the explanations by the center you choose to have it done by.

Your eyes may not even be ready at 18 to have it done, depending if your vision has been stable long enough.

Only tests done at the time you decide will determine that.
