I would recommend the Remington 870 Express Pump Action Shotgun. It is a high quality, reliable, easy to operate Shotgun that most anybody can afford and handle. The Mossberg 500 is just a less expensive copy of the Remington 870 to begin with. The difference in quality, and manufacturing is obvious, but something you need to see for yourself. In this case copying is the best form of flattery.Mossberg will do the job at a cheaper price, and is a decent gun, but I sell Remington 870's... 10-1 in my shop over the other brands including Mossberg and the cheaper still Maverick Model 88..An Over/Under is hardly a gun I would recommend to anyone starting out or getting their first gun. There are really no cheap O/U's I can suggest that are good starter guns. If you are looking for a Trap & Skeet O/U be prepared to spend $1500 and up for a decent one......

I agree with randkl. The Mossberg 535 is an excellent shotgun for hunting and for home defense. Consider the Mossberg 535 ATS. It has both a stock and pistol grip, and I believe it also shoots those big 3 1/2" shells.

The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 pump actions are both about the same, just inexpensive pump shotguns. They have a lot of stocks and accessories for them, it really comes to which company you like more than anything although I think the Remingtons are typically a little bit more expensive. A basic one can be found for less than 300 dollars, even lower if it is used. Some Remingtons that are really "tricked out" can be nearly 1,000, sometimes more, though when they add on tactical stock sets and flash hiders and are made of stainless steel. Prices vary widely depending on what you get. Both are decent though.

I own both Mossberg 500 & a Remington 870. Both are pump action and both are great shotguns (same basic design), so really get what ever you can get a deal on

I have both the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500 w/ 18" barrels and beaded sights. They are both combat grade guns, but if I have to leave one behind it would be the Mossberg behind, not because I think it is a bad gun, but because I have a special love for the 870.

For things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, I've relied on a Mossberg M-500 for nearly 35 years.

For defensive use, I'd not recommend any double-barreled shotgun, whether side by side or over/under. Two doses of medicine isn't much to cure a problem.

For bird hunting, I prefer side by side doubles. Not that they are better than O/U's, just more elegant in my opinion, and they feel better to me.

the u.s. military currently uses the the mossburg 590 for all branches of service, that should tell you something about function & reliability.
walmart sells the new mossburg over & under for just under $500, dont know anyone who has one yet.
