I know Hong Kong used to be a British colony, ceded by China. What is Hong Kong right now? is it a country belonging to China? (like Puerto Rico to USA?) or what is it? does it have it's own military? or does it depend on China's?

yes it was returned by the uk to china as is now a special territory of china, which still maintains its own government largely. however over the past ten years things have changed, particularly in the social aspect. hk used to have very strict regulations against mainlanders coming to the island but the situation has changed now. people come and go without too much restrictions. it also seems as though mainland government has an intention to replace significance of hk as top economic nation in the region with shanghai, beijing. only time will tell.
you will also see hongkies calling themselves hongkies and dislike being associated with mainland china on a personal level.

Hongkong is now a part of China after it was returned by UK. However, it is a special region with a separate government not directly controlled by the Chinese Central Government.
