The origin of the term 'fundamentalist' follows World War I from North America. It was a movement created to challenge liberal theology and Darwinism. Any belief ending wih an ism was considered anti Christianity.

Fundamentalism branches several denominations of Christianity primarily orthodox Protestant Christians who created a series of 12 volume books defending the traditional doctrines of the bible.

For religious fundamentalists of any faith, sacred scripture is considered the authentic, and literal word of their religion's god or gods. Fundamentalist beliefs depend on the twin doctrines that their god or gods articulated their will precisely to prophets, and that followers also have a reliable and perfect record of that revelation.

The word Fundamentalism is no longer a term used in reference to Christians. Such examples used are:
Islamic Fundamentalist
Mormon Fundamentalist
Jewish Fundamentalist
Buddhist Fundamentalist
Hindu Fundamentalist

Here's how I answered this before:

There is definitely more than one definition of fundamentalism. Christians have five fundamentals of the faith. Non-christians (in particular the media) have changed the meaning of the word "fundamentalist" to infer a negative and evil following and even perversion of what the majority of followers from any religion believe.

The changing of what words mean is a primary way that people are manipulated to view and believe a lie instead of the truth.

Obviously, I'm a person who follows the fundamentals of the Christian faith. I do not even believe you can call yourself a "christian" if you do not follow these basic Bible-based beliefs.

Call me a fundie if you want. God's word is god's word. But get off the milk, and onto some meat. The KJV is not the original. King James just gave the rights to print it up. All of the versions of the bible can be good. People who think the KJV is the only bible, well; eat the meat, milk is for babies!

Just what the name says, one who goes back to and sticks t the fundamentals of the their faith. So one who is adhering to the fundamentals of their faith and not compromising faith to please others.

It sad though to see politicians and propaganda machines calling Muslims who stick to their fundamentals as "terrorists" ,apparently any Muslim who sticks to their fundamentals is labeled an extremists.

We didn't see timothy McVeigh being called fundamentalist/extremists nor christianity go on trial for his actions. So why the double standards?

"Fundamentalist" means many things to different people.
Some use the term negatively(all closed minded, bigoted sorts) or positive(all who are uncompromising on basic matters of belief and ethics of whichever sort)

Fundamentalist can mean anything from one who supports the creed of his religion (like a supporter of the Christian Nicene Creed or traditional life-long monogamous other-sex marriage) to Pentecostal "Snake Handlers" to Feeyneyites to Rocor Orthodox to Pol Pot or Stalinist or N Korean Communists to Christopher Hitchens toJihadist Muslims to Hindutva Hindus to Satmar Hasidim Jews to Mad. Murray O'Hare to anyone who takes a stand on any text

Fundamentalist Protestant is a category that takes in any anti-Darwinist,hostile-to-ecumenism, selective biblical literalist( like Gen 1&2 but not John 6,unless LCMS or Wslc Lutheran),suspiciously rejecting any formof modern biblical criticism and its tools " traditional Revivalist Evangelical or Reformed Protestant"(especially those influenced by Daryite Dispensationalism, but not exclusively) who is even unconsciously directed by the pamphlet series"Fundamentals:A Testimony To Truth" of 1910 to 1915.

Fundamentalism is so widely used as a term that it is not easily defined

Fundie: Even Psalms.

Everyone seems to have a differnt meaning for all the so called lables. To me, a fundamentalist is simplye put someone who believe in the Bible and believes we must followit. And I agree, so I have been called overly conservative and a fundy.. oh wow, theres that word ppl use again to negate the Bible and the believers.
I hate labels tho...
Because I do believe in all of the Bible, taking it literally and obeying it all. Yes I do, yet because I wont adhere to the beliefs of man made religion, some say I am liberal. Labels????
Example, I know ther eis to be only one interruption of the Word of God, as there is only one meaning, whatever God is thinking as He speaks. amen.
If I go to church and I question anythin g at all, its like I am reellious or out there. But so much in churches today is about man made rules. You must read the bulletin for a half hr before church. Thats not in the Bible, yet many churches would never consider just handing out a bulletin and allowing ppl to read it later. I go to church to learn, more about God, to Praise Him, and to be there in unity of love and truth with my brothers and sisters there. I want us to be able to walk into church and begin to praise God, not spend so long on the bulletin that there is little time for church, but that does happen a lot and I no longer go to that kind of church. So, some of the ppl in that type of church wouldnt label me a fundy, they say you are liberal. No. I just follow the things God says, not the things many churches teach. I never question God, but I will always question man made things that arent Biblical at all.
It is the fundamentals of the Bible that I stick with. you are correct. And yes there are doctrines in Gods Bible, not man made ones , but Gods. But, churches doctrines are often so far off. I have seen churches divide over the color of the piano, to the color of the new carpet, all kinds of stuff that arent about God at all. And I will always stand up about such nonsense, calling it just what it is to me and to God. HE doesnt care about the color of the piano and surely wouldnt even care if we didnt have one there.
Church is about God, its what is in our hearts, and folowing HIm alone. The rest is all man made STUFF and I have no part of it.
I too stick with the King James Version, and I also use greek and hebrew word studies to learn the truths of how things were translated, it makes things so much clearer.
God bless you in your faith, and stick with what you KNOW GOD says is truth, not any mere man or religion.
And be careful with labels, because what one means to JOe isnt what it means to his best friend Jimmy. You know what I mean. I let only God label me, and as long as He calls me HIS, I am ok with that.
God is calling us all out of man made, false religion. He has shown me that. and into the truths that are only of Him.
We are called back into holiness, obedience and purity, not living as we please and saying ok grace has that covered. Grace will not cover deliberate, willful continued sin.
How do I know that?? God says it, remember when asked about that, the response was GOD FORBID>
To me, FUNDIE is not a bad word, but the devil will always take down anyone of God if we allow it. So was Jesus a fundy? Praise the Lord. Did HE live by Gods words or the words of another man calling what they think is religion???
NO. LEts ALL stick with God and HIs word, Jsut like Jesus did. the path to victory. JEsus saves and delibers. But, we must follow HIm or we arent really His.
Great question. GOd bless you.
You sound like a neat person, e mail me if you like....
