Well i think it's the idea of only allowing people who have lived a good life into heaven......showing that bad people are not allowed through the gates ....
However, it's just a metaphor really....
does anyway actually know if there is a gate?!
I guess what is meant by it is that God regulates who gets into heaven and a gate is a mechanism which shows that

Heaven: A Gated Community developed by God for a select few.
Like gated communities here on earth, the twelve gates of heaven keep the riff-raff out.

it's literal imagery- like when it says it is far easier for a poor man to pass through the gates of heaven than a rich man. God personified a lot of objects in the Bible to give a message we could understand. Revelation is full of these and depending on how you take it (literal or figurative), is there really going to be 7 horsemen riding down on flames? it was written in a way that was relatively ambiguous so we could all take our own meanings and not be spoon fed by others beliefs, read and take your own conclusions. Maybe you will belief there is an actual gate, but the gate I think is God's judgment

There is a gate because they need a place to enter to Heaven and there is a gate to Hell also. The narrow is for Heaven and the Broad one for Heaven.

It's not really a "gate"
well, it's just showing that God only let's in people who are saved and believe in Him to Heaven, but if you aren't, you can not go past that gate until you believe in Him, and you will be going to Hell.
so it's not really a gate, it's just saying that that gate is separating us from Heaven and like yeah. lol.

Interesting question! The gate is there to keep the ones that didn't make it out, I'm sure of it! That would be part of the hell, to be so close to heaven but couldn't get in. awwww....

Because all gated communities are the best ones and the ones everyone wants to get into.

It's probably symbolic, and really some type of spiritual barrier holding everything in and keeping everything else out. Gate is something our minds can concieve of.

The gate to Heaven is through the Earth. If you do good here and praise God you will be in Heaven in the life hereafter.
