Your 9 year old should get involved with some team sports... you could try swimming, soccer, basketball, track... And as a family, you could consult a dietitian or nutritionist to figure out if you're providing healthy meals and snacks for a 9 year old. Most importantly, I hope you're not telling your 9 year old they need to lose weight, because that's a good way to crush a kid's self esteem and set them up for eating disorders down the road..

Do you set a good example? Do you eat together as a family? Play together? Ride bikes? Go for walks? Play soccer in the backyard? Do you eat healthy food and encourage fruits and vegetables as snacks?

First what you need to do is see a therapist about about your issues with weight. Because a 9 yr old girl at 4ft 8 inches at 96 lbs is NOT over weight. The ideal weight for a girl at 5 ft is 100 lbs. Your daughter is is only 2 inches less and 4 pounds less. She's right on track! You however, need help!

My nine year old is about the same size the first thing you should do is talk with your doctor. Our doctor told me to stop giving her regular milk and juice and let her have fresh fruit instead. We all drink sugar free drink and never sodas and candy is a once a month thing now. I don't limit how much she can eat but I do limit what she eats. An example is if she is still hunger after dinner then she can have some carrots or other healthy fresh snacks. We also stay away from a lot of prepackage foods. After dinner we walk the dog this way she gets in some extra exercise and we get to spend quality time talking. Also do not talk about her weight as if it is a problem this will cause her to have low self esteem and she will end up 400 pound one day.

There is a difference in dieting to loose weight and CHANGING the child's diet so they are healthier. Kids should not be so focused on fat and skinny, but rather healthy. Fruits and veggies should be served instead of chips and cookies. Make sure he is atleast getting a well balanced dinner, he may not be eating school lunch properly or purchasing extra snacks from vending machines. You cant really control that, but you can make sure what he gets at home is balanced.

Serve water and milk and juices (real juices like say Juicy Juice instead of Hi-C, V8 splashes instead of koolaid, real oj instead of sunny d) instead of sodas and drinks with high sugar content. Perhaps even make your own juices from fresh fruits and veggies.

Get him some activity like walking or something instead sitting in front of a tv. Dont make a big deal about these changes, just simply make them.

http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx

This site calculates your child's BMI. I plugged in information assuming your child is a boy and set the birth date to 9 years ago exactly. According to the site, your child would be in the 95th percentile for the age group, making him overweight. I'm sure if you plug in the real information that he/she would be at risk for being overweight (seeing as how lots of people don't agree with you about the child being overweight to begin with).

Free programs are pretty simple- they require adequate exercise and proper diet. Cut out ALL caffeinated drinks- that'll make a big difference. Don't add additional salt to food, and purchase "light" and "fat free" items when feasible. Encourage more water drinking and vegetable eating, and choose from whole weight grains. Consider changing portion sizes, and change how you cook food (grill instead of fry, etc.).

My daughter is also over weight at 9 years old she already weighs in at 90 lbs and wears a size 14. I didn't weigh 90 lbs til highschool.
Like you I am not sure why she puts on all the weight. She is always outside riding bikes with her friends. We have a trampoline she plays on daily. In the summer she lived in the pool. She played soccer and t-ball this summer
I guess some of it has to do with her diet. The kid is always hungry. I limit her to breakfast lunch dinner afterschool snack and bed time snack. I been trying to replace chips and ice cream with fruit.
She drinks water instead of juice and soda.

why would a nine year old need to loose weight unless they are like 200 pounds (no offence to anyone) at that age they may be hitting puberty and starting to NATURALLY gain weight no worries the kids body is about 2 grow and the weight will be put somewhere

please do not try to lose weight unless your are very over weight

i'm 13 and happy with my life (some people say i'm over weight but i'm only like i think 130 pounds)

just be happy that you are lucky to be healthy and be greatful for your life (don't try to change your appearence 'cause it doesn't matter even models arn't perfect)

Children MUST be monitored by a doctor to lose weight! Try feeding him healthy foods and encourage him to exercise...restrict computer/video/TV time. You can learn more about healthy eating at www.fitday.com it tells how to balance your diet and what calories are burned for what activity. It is a fun place to track progress. But as I said before. Take the child to the doctor FIRST.
