When a bee stings, the toxins that are released into the blood and subcutaneous tissue stimulate white blood cells and other immune cells to release cytokines into the blood. There are chemical mediators that result in vasodilation (increase in the diameter of the blood wall) and increase in the gap between endothelial cells that make up the wall of blood vessels. This then results in plasma and circulatory white blood cells to leak out.
And when plasma fluid leaks out, then there is widespread facial oedema and systemic oedema.

No reference is needed. The face, especially in a child, has loose connective tissue, and it's quite normal for there to be a lot of swelling. It's also possible you're dealing with a large local reaction, but that's hard to judge without seeing it. As long as there's no oropharyngeal involvement, it's doubtful there's much to it, despite the dramatic look, and I'd wager it'll be ugly for about four or five days, then go away, whether it's treated or not.

It is a natural allergic reaction and will go down in a few days.Keep it cool with Calamine lotion, or cold compresses. I have been stung in the face several times when I kept bees, it is not a pleasant experience.

Facial edema would be expected, especially in an allergic inividual.
If their facial edema continues to get worse, especially if the use of antihistamines has been tried, there would be risk of airway impairment and systemic involvement due to the bite proximity and medical attention should be sought.
