Yeap, particularly since I live in the bible belt. :P

Sometimes I get a strange look and then the conversation continues. I haven't had any problems with telling people I'm an atheist. When it comes up with the one born again fundy that I know (aunt of my best friend), then I'm sure it will be one of "those" times where I'll have to pull out the big guns. Other than that, it's no big deal to people...at least to my face.

I get different reactions. Some do look at me funny, some look at me with disgust, or hate, or confusion, many look indifferent. Some acknowledge that they are atheists too.
The most interesting response I get is "I've never met an atheist before". I wonder if those people are for real.

They try so hard NOT to look at you funny, but you always get that split-second deer-in-the-headlights look.
I think that people think that they've never actually SEEN an atheist before. They don't realize that they meet them every day.

I don't tell people anymore since a friend stopped speaking to me after I told her. Now I just try to avoid the issue, or, if pressed, I say that I'm "not religious", and leave it at that.

Your are not alone.

I feel like an alien from Mars or a Lunatic when I say that I'm an atheist or I don't believe in God.

No, people do look at you funny. Even the ones you've known for years, when you "out" yourself.

I believe in God, but it's fine if you don't. I wouldn't stop talking to you, or damn you to hell. I actually think we may be in hell right now....or maybe purgatory. I don't follow any one religion. I actually can't stand religious freaks. I don't get them at all. I think I actually look at religious freaks a lot weirder than people who don't believe in God. I would ask you how you came to your conclusion though....just out of curiosity. Actually, your questions reminds me of one I have been wanting to ask. Thanks for the reminder.

Kind of. It's not something that comes up in conversation very often, but people are always surprised about it.

There is that 3 second pause before the holy water comes out and I get all wet....apparently the power of Christ compels me. I don't feel so compelled.
