Just asking, i have heard that we only eat what we can grow, that we only wear blus ehsirts, that we never speak to family members who leave the church, and i just read someone who doesn't think we use the internet. Well, I'm mormon, and I'm definitely on the internet, unless thi is some sort of elaborate dream...

No, it just seems like some of the stff they say about us sounds Amish like. Not that they call me Amish, they ust think the things I do and believe are like the Amish. I just remembered that that same person who said we could only eat what we could grow thought we didn't have any electricity...

A research of both Amish and Mormons in the early years of 1830's onward would suggest a similar appearance in dress and life style. At that time both used buggies, for transportation. At that time there was a common mode of living. Farming for the food sources etc.
As has been mentioned in other answers, the current generations hold great disdain for reading historical information. As the two religious groups began to develop or lack of acceptance (Amish) in the march of progress, their differences became more noticeable.
The problem has been already been submitted, the ignorance of our society. Few of the younger generation can recall recent Presidents such as Hover, Roosevelt.

I'm ex-Amish and I have no idea why this is so. There seems to be a lot of ignorance out there regarding different religions in what some people term a "lack of religious literacy." Mainstream Mormons are not like the Amish at all.

As someone who has grown up around the Amish, I would never confuse the Mormons and the Amish, and most people I know would never confuse the two either.

What a question. There is no comparison between the Mormons and the Amish. Read the Revelation. You inhabit two separate churches. Jesus has a message for you. Go find it.

"First, 'Mormon' is a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members are often referred to as 'Mormons,' 'Latter-day Saints,' or 'LDS.' The term 'Saint' means 'member'" (That is quote from Elder M. Russell Ballard). Elder M. Russell Ballard also stated in general conference "The many misunderstandings and false information about the Church are somewhat our own fault for not clearly explaining who we are and what we believe." You should refer people to http://mormon.org/mormonorg/eng/ who are interesting in know knowing more about the LDS religion and people that are only curious about the church should be given accurate information about the church's basic facts and beliefs. You can find some of these beliefs and facts at the below mentioned URL.
And to answer your comment "I know all that brooklyn. I just want to know where they get these ideas about our lifestyle...," The misunderstandings and false information about the Church's lifestyle are due to the fact that many times when people (both members and non-members) are explaining the LDS religion they do not give accurate information and that is why various people have confused opinions about "Mormons".
(After reading through some of the other comments it is important to note that polygamy was a limited practice in the early pioneer days of the Church and it was discontinued in 1890, about117 years ago.)

Because of the branch Mormon groups. Like Warren Jeffs and his Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints down in Colorado City.
More: the branch polygamist women tend to cover their bodies with long sleeves and long skirts and never cut their hair, which is worn braided. Amish tend to do the same. They tend to socialize only among themselves, so remain a mystery to many outsiders.

P.S. to brooklyn: Your holier-than-thou high-and-mighty attitude is one of the reasons I can't tolerate most MORMONS.

Just plain ignorance! Sorry that happens to you. I'm fundamental baptist and we get confused with the Amish because all of us ladies wear only skirts.
