Just a few years ago, that used to be the norm, but with all the latest computer technology, I guess printed envelopes has become much more accepted and common. Most of the baby shower invitations I have received over the years, have been hand-written, but then again, most of them were very low-budget, down-home, informal gatherings. At one time, pre-printed labels were considered "tacky", but that may have gone by the wayside? I know that trying to get the printer to print directly on odd-sized envelopes can be tricky, and if you only have so many envelopes in a package, you may have a problem if you ruin some.
I think it depends on what seems to be the custom in your region (or among your family and friends), as well as how legible and attractive your handwriting is. You might experiment with some different colored inks that match the invitation, and if it looks nice, I don't see anything wrong with it.
I guess a more relevant question is how picky is the person the shower is for? If you think she (or her family) are very formal or particular people, you might try to get more insight into what their expectations are.

When has taking the time to personally hand write something become "out of style"??? Making a personal effort to make something special is always appreciated.
If you are doing a "MASS MAILING" and wish to give the Postal Service an easy time of your MASS MAILING, THEN not only do you TYPE the envelopes, but use the BAR CODING at the bottom, too!!!
C'mon now... I DO hope you are noting the cynicism in that last remark! Baby shower invitations are a PERSONAL invitation (along with other events, such as weddings, birthdays, etc.) and not "corporate" things. The personal touch of handwritten envelopes should be exected.... yes, even on wedding invitations, no matter how large the guest list is!
Have a polite day.

Sure
You could also use an old fashioned type writer... some even have a 'script' setting.
I would also go to the scrapbook store and get some cute 'baby stickers' and close the back of the envelope with them. Stickers on the closer of the envelope in the back is a nice touch.

Of course you can, and you should. That is the proper way to address an envelope, unless it's a business letter.

Yes, of course. (Computer labels look like junk mail -- when did they become so common that personalized, old-fashioned handwriting from a conscientious hostess appears to be a breach of etiquette???)

Depending on the number of people you are inviting it would be a nice personalized touch.

It's not appealing to receive a sloppy invitation; it makes the person invited make assumptions. He or she may think that the shower will be unorganized.
However, if you have neat penmanship, it's completely acceptable.
