Hi. I'm on disablility for 'mental' issues but more recently because of a knee and hip replacement. I can walk about mile and it causes a lot of pain even though it's been more than a year, post-surgery. I don't like to read and watching TV just sucks....I know I need a hobby. I volunteered at a food pantry before I had the bone surgery but couldn't do it anymore before that. I've also worked at a food pantry (volunteer) at the church across the street from me, but it's REALLY hard on my hip/knee, so I don't think I'll be able to do THAT anymore. Please, no more "volunteer" jobs...I just need something to do during the day....any suggestions? Only serious answers please, as this is a really legit thing I'm talking about and IS really my LIfe. I need something to make/create something. I used to do counted cross stitch but now with glasses, I still have doing it, and even that has become boring to me....I just feel like I have nothing to live for (no I'm not going to kill myself).

You have plenty to live for.... you just have to reinvent your life and make it interesting again.

I collect rocks. It is an excuse for me to go near the water... or go for short walks and look for cool rocks. I look them up to see what they are made of and then I stick them in a basket with all the others that I have found. Some are actually quite valuable.

Ever tried to do wood carving... or wood burning? It is very inexpensive to do and very fun.
Just find pictures you like ... and old pieces of wood... and work on it outside on the porch. You can sit and do that.

Then once they are done... you could take them to a flea market, yard sale, or sell them on E-bay if you think they are good enough.

You could also get into scrapbooks. Making scrapbooks with all your old pictures is a whole lot of fun.... and a great way to be creative. Keeps the mind sharp.

Then once you collect some materials... and get pretty good at making the pages.... you could start doing scrapbooks for other people.

There are groups that get together to have scrapbooking parties.... these are loads of fun. Maybe you could host a party yourself to get one started. Just post a flyer at the local scrapbook store and have everyone meet somewhere to do your scrapbooks. :o)

If none of this interests you.... try searching for something all your own ... here is a website that may help you....

I am also disabled. So I'm home all the time on oxygen. Anyhoo, soaps kept me interestered for a couple years. Then finally I found this website!! This to me is like doing volunteer work.
Find a category you know a lot about. I'm lucky, because for me it's "health." So I can really help and advise others. The pay stinks, but that's just fine with me!~! Even if your category is computers or family relationships, you'll really be helping people who really need your help. Go through every category and sub-category. Find your niche, and you'll help others and feel like your life is valuable.

It's amazing to me how many people on the site are disabled.
Not really amazed. It makes perfect sense. There's a disabled guy in the "computer" category. He spends 18 hours a day helping people going crazy over computer problems. He's really doing a good service. He's like a doctor of computers.

Maybe you can help me. Since 9-27 (over 2 weeks) I haven't received any notifications of Best Answers (there have been many,) answers to MY questions, and you probably can't E-Mail me, even though my E-mail is open. Could you tell what is says when you try to E-mail me? (That's if YOUR E-mail is open.) Thank you , my friend, and good luck to you. Sincerely, Lynn

I can really relate to you. I'm also on disabilty for depression and now that I'm getting better, I get so bored during the day (and night). I don't have a lot of friends and the ones I do are married with kids so they're too busy for me except an outing every once in awhile. I do volunteer though, but it's just not enough. I get even more depressed and think that I have nothing to live for. I wish I could help you more. I play on the computer to pass time, but that does get boring after awhile, too.

You need a hobby, but what do you like doing? Are there any classes you can take near you? I recently took an art class at a college. it was only a few weeks long and just for fun but I really enjoyed it. Maybe you should see if a local college offers non credit classes that you're interested in, such as arts, crafts, cooking, etc etc. if you get into some kind of craft (making things like bracelets, necklaces, doll houses, whatever) you can maybe sell it for a little bit of cash. Theres probably other stuff near you that you can sign up for, you just have to find it. What about a pottery class or something? I was going to suggest a trip to the library but since you dont like reading, that wouldnt be a great idea. If you dont want to sign up for a class, take a trip to your local craft/hobby/art store, or even a store like walmart that has a section like that and browse around until something catches your eye. They have a ton of 'hobby' stuff you can do/make/create etc etc. I've always wanted to do that, I just havent gotten around to it yet. I just figured that joining an actual class would allow you to meet some new people, if thats what you're interested in

Dont know how mobile you are but try pampering yourself. Soak in a bubble bath or buy some scented candles for the house. Decorate. Cook. Participate in paid surveys (beaware of those who as you for $ to join) or an online operator (liveops.com.) Open an ebay store. Listen to music.

You sound like you're a creative person who likes to work with her hands, so why not teach yourself how to knit, sew, needle-point or something along those lines. Try taking a course in painting or calligraphy at your local community college or high school. You can make things to give-away to charity, or sell them on eBay and earn a little money.

Take courses at a local community college. It'll give you a place to go during the day as well as stimulate you intellectually. If $ is an object there are programs to assist.

Buy a Nintendo Wii! It's used a lot for exercise for people with disabilities and older people that just can't get around. I highly suggest it. Just don't let it consume your life. haha Make it a social thing.
