Although most pups accept the crate easily, there are some that have to be convinced that it is a good place to be.
The quickest way to teach this is with food treats. Begin by placing treats in the crate for your dog to find, and soon your dog will go into the crate on his own in search of treats. The next step is to lure your dog into the crate with a treat, giving a command. I use “go to your room"
Its also important not to comfort a whining puppy at bed time.
If you leave the room, don't return till they're quiet, if you return to the room before they start whining again, don't make your presence too exiting. Just say "night Night" or what not and go to sleep.
Some first timers at crate training will put a small towel or blanket they've slept with to give the pup their smell for comfort, but its not nescessary.
Eventually you'll be able to just leave the crate open and he'll look at it as his bedroom, and volunterally go to bed at night in his crate, or when you tell him "go to you room" or whatever command you choose to use.
Over exciting them with toys, or comfort items will not help much. it may even make issues worse.
Patience is the only way to handle getting a puppy use kennel sleeping.

we only cover our cages if its still light, or we have the light on for some reason, they seem to settle better if their in the dark, so its a matter of your preference, see if covering it makes it better or worse, hell settle down eventually either way.

What do you prefer when you crawl into your cage at night?
Hint: it's cruel to lock a dog in a cage.

Isn't it better for him to see whats going on and alert you to anything strange? Put the blanket underneath him instead.

You don't have to. I did with my pups because they wanted to be with me so much that they wouldn't settle down. It all depends on how you pup acts. If they are whining and not getting used to the kennel, then I would try it. If not, don't worry about it.

G'day Judy C,
Thank you for your question.
I wouldn't. However, I would put one in there for warmth so that he won't freeze at night during winter.
Regards

Nope you don't have to, most puppies feel comfortable being near you and seeing you.
