I hire people for a living.
I happen to look for both because my company is really into the volunteer work and giving back to the community (this is why they love me so much-I donate time to about 7 different organizations).
It really depends on the type of company you are applying for. Most want job experience, and basically the volunteer work just makes you look better.

Paid work looks better to me, volunteer usually means you either didn't need the money or have a passion for a cause.
If you took it just to get job experience it would look better than no experience.

They are both great. What the employeer is looking for is your commitment to a position weather it is a volunteer or paid position.
