If there is no adult to ride with him he technically he could. You should book his as an "unacompanied minor". There is an extra fee involved but the airlines will track him and make sure they have personnel meet him at the gate, get through security, preboard, etc. Personally, I think 8 is a little too young to fly by themselves, but that's just my opinion. (That's just the worrisome mom in me).

Yes this is true - a child of aged 8 may travel alone and will be classed as an "unaccompanied minor".

NOTE - most airlines will only accept unaccompanied minors if they are traveling on a direct flight and there are no terminal changes.

The child's parent(s) or legal guardian must complete an Unaccompanied Minor form at the ticket counter. This includes providing the name, address and phone number of designating the parent or responsible adult who will meet the child at his or her destination. A child may not travel unaccompanied until this form is completed.

You should check with the airline for the procedures for the designated adult to pick up the child from the airport.

If you called the airline he will fly on and they told you he could fly at age 8 then I'm sure there telling you the truth.
There will be paperwork that will need to be filled out at the airport he is leaving from so make sure they are at the airport ticket counter 90 mins. before departure time.
There will also be a fee that must be paid.
If you are going to meet him at your end and they put your name down as the person meeting him then you must show up. You can't send some one else in your place because the airlines will not turn him over to anyone other than the person listed on the UM forms.
