The best way to discipline a child is to first build a loving relationship. Listen to your child, spend time with your child, have fun with your child. Then when situations arise where discipline is required, you will have a strong relationship built on mutual respect and trust.
The details of how you discipline aren't as important as the foundation of a healthy relationship. Effective discipline without a good relationship is impossible.
When discipline is needed, be very clear in communicating to your child what is expected and then let them know what the consquences are going to be if they don't meet the expectations.
Then, it is crucual that you are true to your word when it comes to consequences. Children will test authority. When the authority can be depended on to be fair and consistent, the child's behavior will be appropriate.

there is no 'cookie cutter' best way. each child is different and it takes getting to know the child and what the child reacts to. my older daughter, you could look at her and tell her you were disappointed in what she did, and she would send herself to her bedroom and stay there the rest of the day if you let her. my younger daughter isn't phased by anything. i can talk, i can time out, i can put her in a corner, i can spank her (for major infractions only--such as physically hurting her sister, or getting loose from my hand and running towards on coming traffic) and she just looks at me and says 'is that supposed to hurt?'... right now we're trying a points system. she has a written list of expected things through out the day...whether it's following instructions the first time, or sleeping in her own bed all night long. if she does a certain thing, she earns points. at the end of the week, (or even daily) she can spend her points on things she wants to do. some of the rewards are half hour of tv time, a trip to the local ice cream shop, an overnight stay at her mamaw's house....things that motivate her. and the rewards cost different amounts of points, starting at 3 and going up to 75. so far it's working for her.

do not punish younger children, instead ignore your child when they are performing undesirable behaviors and pay attention and reward them for doing positive behaviors.
For older children, taking away a privilege (especially driving) is usually effective, not yelling or getting into verbal arguments. Explain why the privilege is being revoked and then explain how it can be earned back. If the child tries to argue while you explain simply say "I'll discuss this with you once you are able to talk calmly" and walk away. For these children, rewarding them with greater privileges as opposed to material items is usually best (once they have them they won't want to loose them), all though the occasional "I appreciate you" gift can also be nice.

Depends on the child....and the age of the child, what ever works, best do it right after the wrong made other wise there is no sense because they would have forgotten the crime. Simple fast disiplines work best.

well...alot of people say the the way is to talk to the child in a strong and firm manner, but that isn't the way I was raised my parents beat my ***, and I turned out good, but It all depends on what your comfortable doing, and what the kid will take heed to.
