"By and large, they said the ordinance was a success because it drove out illegal immigrants, even if it hurt the town’s economy."

Yes contrary to the label "pro" I am against illegal immigration by any nationality, but harming the economy is not the answer. I found it interesting that the mayor who supported removing "criminals" was NOT re-elected even though the illegals had been removed. Who voted him out?

The source disproved a number of issues in the standard Antis rant .
That all other European groups used English and forgot their mother tongue. The post states that up to the 1930s school Board minutes were taken in German and English.
The economy of the town suffered because of the departure of the undocumented, While only two minority owned business's were interviewed for the Article. All the other services that people use in the act of living in that town, just think of all the other services you use monthly.
The Town is paying for legal expenses, for enacting laws that are clearly ,Discriminatory, Against the Civil Rights Act. That they are certain to lose ,and the Town will have to pay court cost and Judgment.
The Mayor was voted out of office. Who voted him out of office ? The Citizens that He convinced the action would solve all of their problems.
If you call throwing the baby out with the bath water.
No, it was not a success.!!

I don't think anyone can dispute many do contribute to the economic base.
I don't believe so many people would be against those who have even illegally immigrated here if they felt several things would be in place to prevent further illegal immigration. Such as...
1. Enforce our Borders better
2. Every state make laws to use SSN verification mandatory for benefits. And no benefits allowed for those here illegally or even legally. That should be a citizens right only.
3. Concentrate on those gang members and also any who have committed crimes.
Along with many other things. You know yourself Chee you're against illegal immigration too. Just you, I, and many others think a solution needs to be found that we don't see getting addressed in our nation.
Basically Anti's and Pro's agree illegal immigration is wrong. It's just how it needs to be addressed and fixed where we seem to bump heads. While we (Pro's) don't believe mass deportations will take place many Anti's still want it. This seems to be our biggest difference of opinion on the subject. So far neither one of us are getting any REAL solutions from those in power. Just small bits such as your article that support one side for awhile then it turns and supports the other.
I just hope one day this issue gets resolved.

I think this is sickening. How many people in North America are descended from immigrants. Everyone came for the same reason. At the turn of the century there were signs up that read, "Irish need not apply" for jobs.

Is the size of the pie the determinor of how good the economy is, or the slice size for the individuals who belong here?
Obviously, businesses that hire or serve illegal immigrants will be hurt if they are gone, but the demand for the services their taxes pay for will also go down.
I don't see the facts to let me know if this is a 'net' cost or not.

Yes.
And frankly there is the PROOF we've been saying all along.
We will gladly bear any (alleged) down side, to be rid of the criminals.
I agree with you Rightwing. Unfortunately there are too many people who think of healthcare as a right they are entitled to without paying. They simply don't get that somebody is paying for it.....and that would be those of us who pay taxes and are insured ourselves. Because the cost of healthcare is divvied up amongst the taxpayers and the insured, who pay higher taxes and higher premiums to cover the cost of the uninsured.

I agree with the people who do NOT feel sorry for the businesses that catered to or depended on illegals.
I also agree with the person who asked, "If they 'can't afford' health care (me: or auto insurance, etc.), then what the hell are they doing going out to eat" or out to nail salons, etc.?
Two personal experiences: I went to a bankruptcy hearing for this guy and his illegal immigrant wife - supposedly they couldn't afford to pay their rent or their piled up utility bills or their credit card bills or the rent they owed their previous landlords, etc., but the wife shows up in court blessed with copious "bling", they just bought a new car for which they 'can't afford' the payments, they have cell phones for themselves and all their (five) children, and have cable TV and internet. And then this wife says to the court that she has been 'blessed to have friends who have given her everything she has.' READ: she steals from everybody, just like she began her stealing when she stole into the country illegally.
Another example: California community colleges charge $20/credit unit for tuition; the taxpayers foot the rest of the bill - the real cost is more like 600/unit or so. The students and the spineless PC politicians round here whine about the cost of tuition... and yet there the students are spending $$ on Starbucks coffee and nacho-flavored Cheetos and going to movies at $10/ticket and out to eat and to clubs and the parking lots are overflowing with cars that are nicer than mine (I'm a professor)... and now the "DREAM" act and movement in CA to offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who are already sucking up resources that don't belong to them so that the cost of college won't be an 'impediment'...? Huh?
So too bad so sad for the businesses who 'depend on' illegals.

The biggest message I took from this article is that businesses like hair salons and restaraunts that catered to illegals closed down. Here's the thing, if these illegals "can't afford health care" for their children..what the hell are they doing goint out to eat? Yet again, my point about people who can't afford health insurance CHOOSE to not have it. It's just not a priority in their lives.
