The ten commandments say that we must have no other God than Jehovah. The penalty for breaking the commandment is death. Is the morally correct thing to do in order to follow the 10 commandments to take a machine gun into a mosque or yoga studio?

The Old Testament is filled with instructions like: do not grow two crops in one field, if a girl is caught having sex outside marriage she is to be stoned, or any disobedient child is to be stoned.. etc..

If we followed the letter of every moral/value in the Old Testament we'd we plucking out eyes and teeth, so what gives? The Old Testament must be understood in the context of its historic period and culture. You need to understand a broader picture to use the Old Testament.

When you do so, you will understand that the Old Testament was introducing a system of governance, a system which people could better promote order at their time. It made great improvements over what they had before. We are also to use the ideals from the Old Testament to promote greater improvements in the time and culture that we find ourselves today.

Taking into account that the New Testament is often referred to as the New Way, I would say learn the lessons from the OT (old Testament) and follow the NT for morals and values.

Sure, why not?

But understand that there is a difference between morality and legality.

However, there is only one moral code in the O.T. :The Ten Commandments. What is wrong with, "Do not steal"? or "Do no murder"? In the same way that I wouldn't like another man to sleep with MY wife, I need to show him the same courtesy/respect and not sleep with HIS wife , even if SHE wants me to !!!

Yes, it tells what is right and wrong; but you should go to the NT too.

In response to Spirit Wanderer, cheir, David v, darwinsfriend, etc.
Many people claim that the OT endorses pedophilia. Every time I debate them though, they never tell me how it does. Strange, isn't it?
Second, it never endorsed rape and child abuse.
Third, when it referred to "rebellious children" it was not referring to children that don't obey their parents.
It was referring to children who "get out of hand" (such as the kid that threatened his father with a knife because the father unplugged his game). Those kids are obviously unstable and are very dangerous.
Fourth, it does not endorse murder! Ever read the Ten Commandments?
"Thou shalt not kill."
(The actual translation is "murder" but most Bibles just say kill).
Fifth, the OT does not endorse taking someone else's land. The land the Israelites took was promised to them by God. But it never says ANYWHERE that we should take any land now.
The OT is a book of laws, morals, and history; none of those commands He gave hold now (at least, not the ones about taking the Holy Land, but a few others still hold [such as not murdering]).
I hope that cleared a few things up for you guys.

Sure, if you want to stone rebellious children and make women wear separate clothes from men, i.e., no pants, etc., and perform yearly sacrifices of sheep, etc. If you want to stick to simple stuff like the ten commandments, those usually work out OK, although you would have to observe the Sabbath.

If your morals and values are an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth then I would say the OT otherwise try the NT Do unto others as you would have them do unto You. Judge not lest thou be Judged Love your Neighbor as you Love yourself. Of course this implies that you must Love yourself.

Torah was also changed a lot by Jewish priests. Quran is the only Divine revelation that is purely God's words and never a single word has been altered in it because God himself takes care of this book being His last revelation.

No any other book will be revealed any more untill the end of this world.
