they can get a pilot's license at 12, but I wouldn't trust someone that age to go very far or land at an unfamiliar airport

It depends on the airline and the route, even the schedule. This might have to be taken into consideration when booking. Here are the conditions for Northwest, just to pluck out an example;
http://www.nwa.com/services/onboard/minor/
5 or 6 is usually the minimum and they're required to be "Unaccompanied minors" or "UM"s is how we refered to them.
As you can see, teens can fly as "UM"s too, but when I've seen this, they were flying with younger siblings. Conditions for visitations with divorced parents usually stipulate that the child has to fly as a UM.
It's safe and taken very seriously by the airlines.

It depends on the airline and airports. I flew ROC to EWR on Continental when I was 13, but there were kids younger than that who were alone on the same flight.

Depends on the airline.
BUT:
Kids flying alone can't be put in the emergency exit row
AND if you're sending a kid 15+, they don't need the fligh attendant service.

Any age it just depends on how much u want to pay to have them fly by themselves. If they are under the certain age then you have to pay a fee.
