Received the sad story of this dog's demise in an email. I was stunned and wondered how many other dog owners were unaware of this situation.

I worked at Kansas State Vet Hospital for a while. One of the doctor's own dogs came in one night after eating a box of raisins. He had to be on dialysis for 3 weeks before his kidneys began working right again. The research I have seen is that there is a fungus that grows on the skin of the grape/raisin that is the toxic part. It is related to the noble yeast that makes wine ferment. You can't get rid of it by simply washing the fruit. it goes dormant until in the digestive tract where it can kill the dog. Depending on the size of the dog they have to eat a lot to get enough to do damage but there has not been enough research to see if the effects build up after prolonged exposure (one grape a day after 5yrs can hurt the dog). The best bet is to stay away from all grapes and raisins for our pets.

Yes, I am aware and hopefully most pet owners are aware that grapes, raisins, chocolate, etc. are toxic to their animals. On a board I was on their little dog ate ONE grape and died. But then again someone said their dogs eats grapes all the time and aren't affected.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Thank You so very much!!! My dog is old 14yrs 125 lbs Alaskan Malamute. That's very old for a large dog. When I eat grapes he eats grapes and I will never again feed him grapes THANK YOU. Now people before you say anything about what I feed him, (sometimes he hurts so much he can barley move his arthritis is so bad) at his age I feed him whatever he wants. He won't make it another winter. and I have med for arthritis and baby aspirin for pain he can have anything that makes him happy!

Yes I am aware of it, but it's always good to keep reminding people of things like this. So many people don't know things like this could make their dog very ill or worse. We all have to learn, it's best not to have to learn the hard way.

Yeah I was aware of this as our Breed Club had it up on their website as one of the foods not to feed your dog. Good idea to put it on here though. Never thought of that. I did have to make it clear to my inlaws though as they used to give grapes to their dogs.
