Your weight is more important than your height. You can't use that "to-the-tip-of-your-nose" rule so much anymore. Given your weight, you should most likely be riding something in a 160-170cm ski. Each manufacturer has a chart for each ski. Find a pair of sticks you like and then consult the chart. Some of the companies put the charts online and some only give the charts to the ski shops.

My backcountry skis are 185 and 180, my alpines are 190, and my racers are 200. I weight 250lbs, so I usually buy skis at the top of the lengths available. You shouldn't need anything longer than 175 and if you get off trail you won't want something longer than 175 at your ability level yet. I've been skiing for 20 years and I still have days when I wish I would have bought a shorter ski for the backcountry.

Stay with an All-Mountain ski. Fatties are only really necessary when you have big-pow. I've skied deep stuff with thinner skis with no problem. If you are goingto be mostly on trail the fatties are only going to make it harder to carve.

The first guy is WRONG, you want your ski to be at forehead level, and if you are a beginner put alot of time into getting a shaped ski, and also quality boots. I am 5'8" and i am riding on 178's, but I have been skiing for around 16 years, and I'm 18.

Jim W coated many of the question. i will upload in basic terms that maximum ski fashions could have a particular chart for a that particular sort. frequently, the charts could be tremendously close from one sort to a distinctive, yet with businesses making one form of ski in 164cm, 171cm 187cm and 181cm and an identical organization making yet another style in 4 different lengths, it truly is terrific to look for suggestion from the chart for the particular sort of ski you eventually come to a decision to purchase.

Your skis should be about up to you chin or nose, but it is really up to you. Also if you are going back country, you will need quite wide skis in order to stay on top of the powder.
