This refers to dying rather than living forever. Had they not sinned, they would have lived forever. Jesus made it so that we still have a chance to live forever- by dying to sin.
Also, the word "day" can have many meanings. It can mean time or era.

God never said they would die the same day---He said "You will surely die"....that is all. They would not have died if they had not sinned, death did not enter the world until the fall of Adam and Eve...in fact, it still took Adam 930 years to die but eventually, he did die.
God never lies...He is the Truth and the Way.
Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Genesis 5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

God didn't lie. God had created Adam and Eve to live on Earth forever in the garden of Eden and not to have to die at all. So, after they ate the forbidden fruit God told them that they were going to die and they did die as we all must die because of their sin. Remember, that to God, time is relative. We're told in the Bible that to God a day is but a 1,000 years and a 1,000 years is but a day. God created a 24 hr day for us not for Him.

Adam and Eve died alright. They had eternal life with God. They had total protection and provision. They would never need to work because God provided everything, yes everything, that they wanted.
But then they rebelled against God and ate the forbidden fruit.
They lost their connection with God and became dead in their sin. "The wages of sin is death." For this reason, God gave us Jesus to take away the sins of the world. We are dead in our sins until we believe in Jesus Christ. We become alive again in Christ.
All of those sacrificed animals done by Israel only covered man's sin, but Jesus a perfect, unblemished Lamb of God took all those sins away. If we believe in Him, we are washed white as snow, meaning our sins are washed away.
Do you remember in Genesis where it says "their eyes were opened" after they ate the fruit. At that moment they died spiritually. We are more spiritual than we are physical or flesh & blood.
God didn't lie, because God is Spirit. Spirit is eternal. When we believe in Jesus we reconnect to that Spirit (God) that we died to in Adam. If Jesus had not came to earth, you would still be dead in your sins and bound for eternal hell.
We not only died - we died eternally when Adam ate that fruit.
Have you ever read the Bible? It is a marvelous book. It is His Story - history. About God who so changed the world that we split time into BC and AD. It is past, present and future.
It is the inspired Word of the Living God. Some people say that the Bible is ALIVE and I am one of them.

Well, when God said that if Adam and Eve ate from the tree they would die, he meant someday, he didn't mean right then and there. They were supposed to live forever, but he punished them for eating the fruit from the tree by giving them death someday.

Well...
You didn't answer the question, but only deflected the question with a strawman...so the "thumbs-downs" are warranted either way...
Adam did live for another 930 years after eating the apple, you are right.
But here is your explanation:

It all depends on your interpretation...literal or metaphorical. Which, by the way, fundamentalists also seem to have a MASSIVE problem understanding. They argue that "Thou shalt surely die" is a metaphor for spiritual death, but they have no problem believing that Adam literally lived for 930 years. I have learned to ignore them, and I'm much happier because of it.

"Understanding" is a KEY to LIFE.
Adam and Eve DID DIE Instantly when they ate that Fruit.
(THEY DIED Spiritually "Instantly).
Spiritual Death of a Spirit is this: GOD Almighty Dosent' "FLOW" through you AnyMore.
GOD Almighty Quit Flowing Through Adam and Eve INSTANTLY when they Committed "High Treason" (Disobeyed GOD and Ate of that Tree).
Now, it took satan just about 1,000 Years to kill their Bodys with Physical Death.
A Day is as a Thousand Years to GOD.
So, they Died Instantly (on that Day they Disobeyed) SPIRITUALLY.
Then, they Died Physically about 1000 Years Later, and a Thousands Years is as a Day to GOD.
So There!
Cool! and Dit==============to!
UnderStanding! Good Thing to Have!
Thanky Jesus!

Lol and they call us Fundies. He was speaking of spiritual death. In the same way Nicodemus was confused when Jesus told him he must be born again. Nicodemus asked can a man go back into his mothers womb? Jesus told him that which is born of flesh is flesh. Jesus was referring to a spiritual rebirth which was needed to fix mans spiritual death.
