What age do you think a child needs to be to read this book? Just an average age is good..we all know it depends on the kid. But just an average. My daughter REALLY loved the movie and I want to encourage her to read it but not if it's beyond her. Thanks!

My daughter read the book when she was 8. I told her she had to read it before she could watch the movie.

It depends on their reading level. I read it when I was six, but I was always a very advanced reader. (I read the original version of Les Miserables in grade eight or nine and this 1100 or so page book by Charles Fort in grade six and understood it all.) I would say for the average child around the age of nine or so. My brother is an average reader and he read it at nine.

Any age from 6 and up. There are different versions available. You can go just by the number of pages too.
Of course, there is the chance that having read an abridged one, she may not want to read the "original one".

I think 7.5 -8 yrs is when they can read by themselves.
Below that, I would suggest you both read couple of chapters together every day or so.

If you think she is too young to read it on her own, why not read it together? I first read it when I was eight, but then, I was a bit advanced in the reading department, already reading chapter books in second grade. (I started reading Judy Blume then, but that was partially because my older sister was reading her.) Yet, when I was in the third grade, I chose a book for a book report that was a litle too advanced for me, so my mom and I read it together. Other than that, my parents and I quit reading books together when I started to read more independantly. If my child(ren) are willing, we'll keep reading as a family, despite what they are and aren't doing on their own.

So, like I said, just assess your daughter's level and willingness.

Around eight.
Mom, it's always better to have them read the book (or have it read to them) BEFORE they see the movie.
Make sure she sees the 'original' movie as well, not just the one which came out recently.

I think anywhere between 8 or 9 is good. When I was in 4th grade, we read it as a class.
