My son is currently taking it for an undetermined length of time. I would like to know if I should be on the watch for any problems associated with taking it over an extended period of time. So far, he hasn't experienced anything, but some relief from pain.
Thanks so much for any input you might have:)

Very Similar location Gillian... only he has a spinal tumor growing inside the actual nerve itself. It is inoperable and effecting the things you mentioned, plus causing terrible testicular pain and effecting other functions in that area. So far the relief has been great for him from the Lyrica and they have found some medication to help so far with some of the other complications. Thank you both so much for the information. That was exactly what I was looking for and hoping to hear! I'm going to leave this up for a bit longer in case someone else has a different experience with Lyrica.

I have been on Lyrica for 8 months now and I love it!! Other than the first couple of weeks when I started it, I have not experianced any side effects at all. I have taken other similar drugs and wasn't at all happy with them or the effects they carried.
I don't know why your son is taking it, but I am taking it because I have severe, maybe permanant sciatic nerve damage through my right leg. The lyrica has allowed me at least 40% more mobility than anything else I've tried. I used to have some really bad days with the Nerve pain and I haven't had any within the past 6months. So all in all, I say its a wonderful drug that so far I am very grateful to have discovered. With no lasting side effects in my case.
Wish your son the best of luck and hope he heals soon.

I was on Lyrica for several years due to nerve damage from a back injury. Although I did not have any adverse side effect while taking it, I did experienced an extreme feeling of doom and gloom when I was out of my medication. Which went away when I would take it again. I still feel quite "off" and I have been off it for about 6 months now! I don't know if it's because I was on it for so long or what. At times I feel SO depressed for no reason. I have lost all interest in just about everything including sex! I also feel totally un-empathetic and was NEVER like this prior to taking Lyrica and fear that it has "rewired" my brain permanently! And that I will never feel the same again unless I were to get back on it again.(which I refuse to do because of this!) So my suggestion is to only take it short term.
Try not taking it for a couple of days and see if you have the same feelings I've described. And if you do, stop taking it all together before it's too late and you end up like me!

I have been on Lyrica for two years, with no side effects. I was given it due to peripheral neuropathy due to Arthritis and a prolapsed disc in my spine L3, which presses against the nerve roots to my bowel, bladder and legs. However the pins and needles, that kept me awake at night have gone and I am sleeping so much better now.
They thought at one stage I had a Tumor in my Spine, not that they told me until the results of the MRI came back! Its not nice and when they stated 'long term pain medication' I almost flipped, more pills? However they started me on Fentanyl Transdermal Patches, first week I was vomiting, then got the injection to stop that side effect and since then my body has accepted this drug, 80 times more powerful than Morphine! That and the Lyrica keep me going, but when the Disc does whatever it does, nothing kills the pain! Fortnight ago I just passed out on the floor came too 3 hours later. However, I do keep fit and mobile, intend to stay fit and mobile for as long as I can, because if the bowel and bladder do go, then that is classed as a emergency and they will go in to remove the Disc.

I have Cauda Equina Syndrome thanks to a botched epidural injection. I have been on Lyrica for nearly six years with reasonably good success, although it is occasionally necessary to increase the dosage. I do find that I am a bit groggy during parts of the day, particularly after an increase in dosage. Not sure what the dosage limit is, but I am taking 300 mg. twice daily. We've experimented with 150/150/300 (three times daily) and it helps depending on activity. The high price of the drug keeps me from asking for increased dosage. I am hoping there are no long-term complications that I am not yet aware of and am hoping Lyrica becomes generic soon.

Acupuncture, which involves inserting thin needles into various points on your body, may reduce peripheral neuropathy symptoms.
