the name 'god gene' is a misnomer. the book refers to the brains role in the ability to have a spritual experience. which is much more genarlised than a mere belief in god.

Yes, the believers here on YA show us you are quite right. There is nothing else to try to support beliefs but emotions and rhetoric. If there was more, believers would offer it.

Obviously those are huge influences for many, many folks who consider themselves religious.
But the origins of religiousness are in the sorts of experience that are before emotional agitation and too basic for rhetoric ... as can be encountered in contemplative/ meditative practice.
Much of the Buddhist spiritual tradition emphasizes the latter approach to being religious, but it's present in contemplative currents within various religions across the board.

Belief is a matter of accepting the evidence provided. Faith is a matter of being faithful to the One we have based our belief on.
Emotion and rhetoric have nothing to do with it.

You might enjoy "The God Gene" by Dean Hamer which explores the possibility of a bio-physical predisposition for people having god experiences.

Rejection of God is based upon the feeling of independence that one gets when all moral oversight is swept away.

It has to be emotional, because all so-called facts are distortions of the truth, and the believers have to be emotional to believe such nonsense.
