The best book I ever got my dd was "The Care and Keeping of You" It explains EVERYTHING and the discussions that came out of that have been great. It explains everything on their level.

I highly recommend it.

I had to learn through school about it, It wasn't a topic to be discuss at home at the time. I was 10 when I got my period and I was in a foster home at that time. It was summertime and I wasn't totally shocked, but I did kind of wondered what it was. It took me a few moments to clue in. I would tell her within a couple of years. Tell her that it is ok for her to ask you woman questions about her changing body. The foster mom sent her 16 year old daughter to help me get a pad on for the first time. She taught me how to use it. This was back in 1982.

Just tell her what it is, why she gets, what to do, and around when she can expect to get it (tell her like 9-15). Just don't make it to serious, get some ice cream and sit by a lake or take a walk in a park. Make sure she is comfortable and encourage her to ask questions. It will be hard for her not to tell for too long. You were really scared, i guess, but more often than not, the embarrassment of going to buy pads for the first time outweighs telling your mom so she can get you pads next time shes out. But to ensure she wont be too scared to tell you, make sure she knows that all healthy women get it, that its not dirty or embarrassing and its necessary part of life.

I think you should tell her when she starts the 5th grade. I know of several children that started then. I'm sure there are some child friendly books available that can guide you through the conversation.

Talk to her about it. Buy some stuff to put in the bathroom so when she does start she can use them.
