My 13 month old has had diarrhea for four weeks now, ever since I began giving her whole milk. She was strictly breastfed until then. I started with whole milk mixed with frozen breastmilk. She began having diarrhea and vomited about four times over a five-day period. Then I gave her breastmilk for two days, and it cleared up. I began the whole milk again (I was only feeding frozen breastmilk at this time because she refused the breast). The diarrhea started again. Meanwhile, I ran out of frozen breastmilk. I took her to the doctor, who told me to continue with only whole milk and she would adjust. One week later, she still had diarrhea. So a week ago, I started soy milk. The diarrhea has continued. She is having 5-8 bowel movements in a day. Her poor little bottom is bright red, and she screams when I change her. I am going back to the doctor this week, but has anyone else had a situation similar to this? If so, what was the conclusion? Thanks.

I have a very sensitive 2 year old that as an infant couldn't handle milk or soy, he can now handle just soy. We also believe he has a gluten intolerance which is something you may want to look into. Try mixing some yogurt into the soy milk, just some plain or vanilla. when your intenstines get upset with diarrhea the good bacteria that help get flushed out and the yogurt can replace it. you should also be looking at the other things that your toddler is eating as a source of dairy. alot of snacks have it in it. Good luck I hope you get it sorted out soon, poor baby.

I'd cut back on the amount that you're giving her. If it helps to mix it with breastmilk, then I would continue to do so.

If you don't have anymore breasmilk and you still want to do cow's milk, try skim, 1% or 2%.

If none of that works, there is no law that says she HAS to start drinking milk at 1. She simply may not be ready for cow's milk. You can make sure she gets the calcium and fats from other foods that she eats.

Her digestive system may be sensitive. My son would not tolerate milk after we stopped nursing. I continued to pump and he drank it from a cup. He is now 18 and still won't drink milk.
Your child could be lactose intolerant. Lactose-reduced milk and other products are available at most supermarkets. The milk contains all of the nutrients found in regular milk and remains fresh for about the same length of time, or longer if it is super-pasteurized. You could try giving this to your daughter to see how she reacts.

sounds like you are either giving her to much or she is allergic to cows milk.....have you talked to her dr? you could switch her to soy milk....or if you have not dried up yet you could contine to pump and give her that.....but diarrea for 4 weeks is not good at all and she can become severly dehydrated.....have you tried using pedalyte to help get some electrolyes back into her system??
