i just read an article on yahoo news that said some senator told his aides to get vaccinated against stuff like hepititus and tetanus and others before visiting talladega super speedway in alabama and lowe's motor speedway in concord, nc. i'm including a link to the article below. do people really look at nascar fans this way, or is it just the in the way i'm looking at it?

The senators statement has more to do with politics, elitism and racism then any real health risks.

There is a stereotype that NASCAR fans are "rednecks." I personally don't know enough to verify the truth of this, but I would say that NASCAR fans are different from PGA fans. There is definitely a social difference between NASCAR fans and PGA fans, for example.

That being the case, I would imagine that some people are fans of both.

I'm not sure the senator was referring to NASCAR fans however, I think he was referring to traveling into a crowded area where diseases could be spread.

For example, if he said he was travelling to DC, or another major metropolitan area, it would be a good idea to get vaccinated.

I could also see how this was taken out of context.

In this day and age, if you're a public official you really have to watch everything you say.

The thing is that NASCAR, although the stereotype still applies sometimes, has changed. There are a lot more NASCAR fans now and they are coming from everywhere. Nascar fans definitely do not have diseases that he should be concerned with. If he thinks we are full of disease all he needs to do is just stay clear of us, and his health will be perfectly ok.

Just another over paid politician with nothing better to do while waiting on the next Congressional break. Trying to justify him being there.

Clearly a racial remark in my opinion because most fans are white. He seems to be looking at them as southern, beer drinking, tobacco chewing hicks.
I plan on writing him a nasty letter.
