I hear this over and over again when Satanists are challenged "most of us don't even believe in Satan." That makes no sense to me.

Satanism at it's core is truly Humanism. However, they view Satan as a figure-head, since Satan's views were quite Humanist themselves. They do not see Satan as a being that actually exists.

The Nine Satanic Statements
The Nine Satanic Statements are to outline what Satan within the Church of Satan Symbolizes. They are:

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!

2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!

3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!

4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!

5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!

6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!

7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!

8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!

9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years!

My understanding, as I have studied this belief system quite some time ago, is that they follow the "idea" of Satan, They do not believe in a god and satan and do not believe in sin.
Their beliefs state to better themselves, they work much with the moon phases and a lot of "pagan" beliefs..(I use this term"pagan" very loosly) and go through lives doing exactly this, whether it be spiritually or physically, money wize, ect ect and do whatever it takes to get it. They believe it is their right to do what they want whether it hurts other in the process or not.
Most satanists you will find, still have some morals..lol...very very few satanists will actually kill people or sacrifice them..this is mostly a myth brought on by the hollywoodizing of the religion. The odd news artical you see of a satanist killing people is much like the crazy catholics/muslims/whatever that have done the same thing in the name of thier religion.

I would love to answer this question in full detail, but I'm afraid I'm amused by the some of the comments. Basically if you're a LaVeyan Satanist then you believe that Satan is the symbol of "peoples natural desires"

Personally, I don't believe in a God or a Devil.

Anton Levy began the Church of devil and wrote a e book titled "The Satanic Bible". yet he actually did not have faith in devil as a literal, actual personage. He believed in devil as a archetype or image that devil represents guy achieving his repressed, organic desires. somebody of that philosophy might evaluate themselves to be a Satanist on a commonly used philosophical point, lots interior an identical many many declare to be Christians in a commonly used philosophical point, even although they don't attend a church or evaluate the bible to be one hundred% precise. Thomas Jefferson is an occasion of a few who claimed to be a Christian yet rejected lots of the Bible and held no allegiance to any particular religious denomination or custom.

Because they want to experience the joy and "freedom" of being able to do what you want, without realizing their is a penalty to pay,

if Satan never existed than he never paid the penalty and neither will they

that's the belief, but it is a false hope

they say Satan is a creation of the christian Church, but he was written in Genesis , which is 4000 years older than the Christina church, and about 1000 years older than the Jewish religion

May God give them spiritual eyes,

we all have a choice, follow the lamb of god or follow the Goat of Mendez (that's the rock-on symbol they make with their hands)

The lamb follows the Shepherd, and it's the Shepherd who laid down his life for the flock

Whereas goats are stubborn creatures, who want it all their own way

The majority of formal Satanists are materialist atheists--they deny the existence of any supernatural beings. They use "Satan" as a convenient symbol that amuses them.

satanists believe in the essence of what lucifer (satan's name) actually represented...the belief in doing what one wants to do; following one's own will.
They don't believe in following the will of the devil or God but their own will...they are not devil-worshippers necessarily. They are not atheists necessarily either.

The same reason most people who claim a belief in christ aren't really very good christians.

Free your mind.

addenda:
The bible was written after christ died. The stories are oral history handed down for countless generations.

Most people who use the word satanist are really hedonists. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Because it's not about finding something or someone to believe in - it's about oneself. Satan is simply a philosophy to emulate with respect to certain things, a thought, a programme, if you will.
Call it a "means to an end".

Because they belive the lie that Satan tells. That he doesn't exsist. If he doesn't exsist then we could sin freely. If there is no Satan and no Hell, then every1 goes to heaven. Even if that were true then we would still go to Hell because Satan isn't even in Hell. He doesn't decide who goes to Hell. WE do. We choose to go to Hell by not accepting God's gift.
