John's Gospel was written in Greek. What is normally translated as "word" could be translated as "truth" or "wisdom". The belief that God's truth is God and can become man is very similar to the Hindu concept of Guru. It also has parallels with the Wisdom writings in the Old Testament.

The early church had problems with the relationship between Jesus, the Father, the Holy Spirit and the Jewish Yahweh. If Jesus is part of a divine trinity, he must have existed before he became man, but why was his existence not revealed previously. John's Gospel seeks to explain this apparent silence by describing Jesus as the word, or wisdom of God that Jewish scholars had acknowledged for centuries.

Good Question all around and no one is judging anyone's Faith belief which is so nice to see.
God was the word and Jesus is the flesh of God. I really liked and agree with victor 7707 and his answer. I also liked what everyone else had to say as well. I am Catholic and I still don't understand the Holy Trinity as I don't
understand how God can be all 3 in one. I really liked the answers you got today.

John's Gospel introduces Christ, not from His birth, but from "the beginning" as "the Word" (Logos) Who as Deity is involved in every aspect of creation (1:1-3) and Who later becomes flesh (1:14) in order that He might take away our sins as the spotless, sacrificial Lamb (John 1:29).

Mixing contrary things makes an oxy-MORON.
Comparing spiritual with spiritual is far better:

"verily, verily" gospel, according to John John

John 1:1 ... Law(Word) was God ... begin(fear)
John 1:2 ... Grace(Word) is of God ... end(no fear)

John 3:16 ... Law(God) & Son ... condemnation & sacrifice
John 3:17 ... Grace(God) & Son ... no cond'n nor sacrifice

John 5: two resurrections, the latter of damnation
John 11: one resurrection the last day unto life for all

John 5: accusation (of law: accuser of the brethren)
John 5: no accusation

John 5: man wanted help into troubled water
John 5: man healed by seven grace us words instead

John 8: condemnation of adulteress... by law
John 8: no condemnation of adulteress... by grace

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

In the morning when you rise,
Do you open up your eyes, see what I see?
Do you see the same things ev'ry day?
Do you think of a way to start the day
Getting things in proportion?
Spread the news and help the world go 'round.
Have you heard of a time that will help us get it together again?
Have you heard of the word that will stop us going wrong?
Well, the time is near and the word you'll hear
When you get things in perspective.
Spread the news and help the word go round.

There's a time and the time is now and it's right for me,
It's right for me, and the time is now.
There's a word and the word is love and it's right for me,
It's right for me, and the word is love.

Have you heard of a time that will help get it together again?
Have you heard of the word that will stop us going wrong?
Well, the time is near and the word you'll hear
When you get things in perspective.
Spread the news and help the word go round.

There's a time and the time is now and it's right for me,
It's right for me, and the time is now.
There's a word and the word is love and it's right for me,
It's right for me, and the word is love.

Jesus Christ is the word, and the word is truth. John 3:16 says For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us. He was a perfect sacrifice for our sins. His blood atonement on the cross covers ours sins if we if accept his free gift of salvation. Eph 2:8&9 says For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Jesus washed away our sins with the crucifixtion. Have you accepted Jesus in your heart, have you become a born again Christian? If you would like to just say this simple sinners pray believing in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, just say Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you have any questions just send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

The 'word of god' was a mystical concept 2000 years ago. Christians today often refer to the Bible itself as 'the word of god', but that would have been considered heresy in the early church, since 'the word' had nothing to do with written words, but is more like what we might call 'the will of god'.
