Theoretically, it is against the law to break the video encryption on a DVD which is why the movie industry keeps filing law suits and shutting down software companies that produce software to do this. There is really good software based outside the USA that cannot be shutdown - the one that I have is Slysoft's AnyDVD. This wonderful software just makes the video automatically decrypted when you look at it with any other program.

Then you can use a legal DVD copy or Video Converter program that does NOT break the encryption. (like the shareware "DVDShrink" program for copying to DVD or the shareware "AutoGK" for converting to DIVX)

As long as you buy a movie, there is no way that the movie industry is going to tell an individual that they cannot convert a movie that they bought to play on their portable media player - whether it is an Archos, an iPod or anything else. They will go after those "sharing" video first.

Its perfectly legal to copy the contents from your DVD to another location, but its illegal to try to circumvent the DVD encryption, which is your first problem.

Your second problem is that a DVD usually contains 4+ Gigs of movie, but your ipod touch is either an 8 or 16 Gig model! It is MUCH easier to go the legal route and purchase the movie from itunes. It will cost less than the software that you must buy from another country.

The FBI and Hollywood are very particular about this...it says in the disclaimer that even if you're not going to charge money to view it (for example, using it for yourself), it is still illegal.
