I did some home canning this summer (dill pickles and beets) and am about to start eating them ,but i've never done this before and i'm nervous that they could be spoiled. Will it be obvious? Is there mold, a bad smell, etc if the canning didn't work? I'd hate to make myself and family sick...please let me know.

i think pickles can last almost forever. they just sit in vinegar so they should be ok.

When you open the jar your should hear a pop which indicates that the seal is intact. If you see anything unusual or smell something that is not right, dont eat them. If you followed all the directions for canning, they should be fine.
