2007-10-13 03:14:49 · 20 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pets Rodents

peggy, i'm not "breeding" them. i only got two hamsters because i didn't want to get just one due to loneliness. and the pet store lady told me that they were both male, apparantly the last time i checked that wasn't true. as for the researching part, that's why i'm asking.

Depending on the species, your hamsters could have babies in 16-21 days or as much as 28-30 days!
As far as how many, again depends on the species, most dwarf hamsters average about 5 pups(18-21 days), syrians could have 15-20 pups (16 days)!!!!
It is very important to leave them mother alone when the pups are born and make sure her cage is clean a few days prior to the birth.
Learning all this is really something a person should do before breeding the hamsters, or just keep the hamsters separate and not have any babies.
Another thing a good breeder would do is know where the babies will be going when they are ready, not to mention making sure the parents are of the quality to be bred.

This is just a response to Peggy, maybe this guy or gal did not plan on the hamsters "doing it". I did not know the sex of my hamster for the longest time. You and another top contributor are so judge mental of people that ask questions. You guys must not have a job and all you do is sit and answer questions all day long.
Oh to the poster of this question good luck with the babies.

Sorry, but why you are breeding hamsters without any researching? The pregnancy period is one from the basic things. It lasts for about 15-17 days in Syrian hamsters and 18-21 d. in dwarves.
And why you are breeding at all? It also means lots of work - yes, pregnant and nursing females need special care - and finding good homes for pups: pet shops aren't the right ones! And lots of hamsters is in rescue. The good reason for breeding is like to breed for a specific mutation (while you have learned about genetic basics) and healthly animals; that "babies are cute" isn't good reason.
So more research, research, and research! Type "hamster breeding" in Google and read every article you find, it'll help you about the basics.

Lol. It Will Very Soon. My Hamster did that and she did have them like 3 weeks after. It's not that long. But Remember, when she has them don't touch the babies until they got alot of fur. Oh and take the dad out and put him in another cage. B/c when he trys to play with her or anything she'll go nuts and chase him around and try to kill him! Ok Remeber that!!!

It takes longer than you think...I know I have a male and female. It is 21 days!!!! So you have a wait. Be careful if this her first litter...they sometimes eat their own little ones. Don't bother her and do as little as possible to the cage until the little ones are running around. Then clean the cage! It will sure need it by the time you can.

they will be born like in 19-21 days and they can have as many as 16 babies but the average is 4-5 babies.when the the babies are born,do not touch them until they are 2 weeks old or else she will eat them.

it all depends on the hamsters. they could have anywhere from 3 to 8 babies and they'll have them anytime from 5 days to a month. be sure to move the male to another cage!!

once the mother has had the babies LEAVE THEM ALONE. only mess around with their cage to give them food and water. do not touch the babies or the mother for at least 10 days or so.

keep an eye on them. she may have 5 babies and the next day you'll only see 4. it's a natural instinct for the mother to eat her babies if she can tell that there's something wrong with them. at the pet store i worked at, one of our hamsters had babies and she was trying to kill one of them and the girl i worked with (despite what i'd told her) got the mother away from it (by pushing the baby a little with a straw or a stick or something i believe?) and we separated them a few days later and the one she was trying to eat died of respiratory problems.

Your female hamster will have babies in 20 days the most. You will have about 18 babies the most. I'm going to give you a few mating tips 1.When your hamster does have babies only go in her cage to give her water & food 2.Don't touch the babies intill they are 2 months old 3.Only mate them in a seprate cage or if you have no extra cage only mate in the males cage. If you knew thise stuff sorry I didn't know. If you didn't know this stuff you learned something today. I know this stuff because I have mated hamsters before.

they will have babies 2-9 days, they probably will have maybe 4-7 don't touch the young for about 12 days or so.The mom will eat them i know that sounds wrong but its true.make sure that they are in a quite place because if its loud or any sudden noises the mother will protect her babies the only way she knows how,eat them. If its her first time litter she may eat them but she may not.DO NOT HAVE THE MALE IN THE CAGE WHEN SHE GIVES BIRTH!!!.He will probably eat them some tend to help raise them so really its your decision

Good Luck :D
