I have to disagree I have a decent job now and have gotten three unsolicited offers in the last 2 weeks, one of which I am pursuing. At 49 I finally received my BSBA and I think this has contributed to my offers. Take a good look at your resume make sure you have included the skills you have obtained running your own business. HR, accounts receivable, payable etc.

First, BUY THE BOOK "Finding a Job After 50: Reinvent Yourself for the 21st Century" It's only $7.00 at Amazon.

Now, you don't mention if you are not getting the job or not getting interviews. If you are not getting interviews, you need to change your resume. Your resume does not need to say that you graduated high school in 1973. Get professional resume help if you need. You do not want to give away your age on a resume -- except that you are "experienced."

Now that you are getting interviews, you need to take away the top reasons employers do not want to hire older employees. Healthcare costs and fresh energetic ideas.

First, if you are able, get yourself private insurance. Let your employer know you will opt out of any healthcare program offered.

Next do not discuss the commodore 64 you used to program or your 8-track player that still works. GET CURRENT! Talk about your anticipation of the release of Vista's SP2 or your disappointment with the fact that the 3rd generation iPod nano still doesn't come with video out capabilities.

Step sprightly! It's not your age that is really the problem to employers. It's your attitude and energy level.

When seated in the interview, do not cross your arms or legs. Do not let your back touch the chair back. Show the employer that you are living in today's world -- not yesteryear.

Show that you are healthy, young thinking, and full of energy.

Lastly, employers don't care that you want to retire in 10 or 15 years. They only care about the next three to four years. Why are you better than a 24 year old? Well, perhaps you have no family obligations. Kids all grown up. You can get there at 6:00am in needed. You haven't missed a day's work in the last 5 years. You are not looking to be the new boss in 5 years. You are just there to work and help a company grow. You work because it's in your blood. You have to -- not for the money but because you cannot sit still. You can't even imagine what retirement is like. Awful. You see yourself working well into your 80's. You are not interested in stealing company secrets and venturing out on your own. You did that and you were very successful. Now you are looking to bring your creativity and expertise to a company that will appreciate your contributions.

I know we 50 some things are all in it together cannot quite retire and still need to work. I guess I would just maybe get some Job Counsel ling then to help decide what is best for you. I work in a Factory and never see my self out of there because of the Health Insurance too. Don't Give up

Be a driving instructor? decorator - register with help the aged giving better priced quotes and discounts?
Start an ironing service - charge £15 a bag? just need some space and a good iron. If you were into printing try making number plates for cars with different style fonts and designs, i know someone who does well with it and sells them on Ebay.
Do a gardening/lawn cutting service in the summer and tree cutting in winter - it's fresh air and good money.
What about buying a truck with a hiab crane on and doing building materials delivery? you may need to pass the test though.

Despite the age discrimination act it is hard to get a job over 50 as i know myself. if you want to earn good money and you are fit do a plastering course, very good pay or pluming/central heating course. Again really good pay! Good luck

wait til you are 60 if you think it's bad now. Basically interview and apply for all jobs that wouldn't make you suicidal. and then always keep looking for that perfect job once you are hired.
